πŸš—πŸ’₯ How Far Does Your Car Really Travel When You Look Away?

πŸ‘€ "It's just a quick glance..."
But even at city speeds, distracted driving can turn a short look into a long, dangerous distance.

βš™οΈ Stopping distance = Reaction distance + Braking distance

Let's do the math πŸ‘‡

πŸ›£οΈ At 50 km/h, your vehicle travels about 13.9 metres per second (roughly 3 car lengths every second!).

βœ… If you're paying attention:

Average reaction time = 1.5 seconds

Reaction distance = 13.9 Γ— 1.5 = 20.8 metres

Average braking distance = about 25 metres

πŸ”Ή Total stopping distance = ~45 metres
That's about half a soccer field - even when alert!

πŸ“± Now add distraction:

Looking at your phone for 2 seconds = 13.9 Γ— 2 = 27.8 metres traveled before you even react.

πŸ’₯ That extra glance means your total stopping distance can jump from 45 metres to over 70 metres - and that can easily be the difference between a close call and a collision.

🚦 Keep your eyes up. The text, the notification, the playlist - it can wait.

πŸš‘ Could You Handle a Medical Emergency at Home?

Accidents don't wait for paramedics - sometimes you are the first responder.

πŸ’‘ Learn the basics of first aid so you can act quickly and confidently:
πŸ”Ή Cuts & Bleeding: Apply firm pressure with a clean cloth; elevate if possible.
πŸ”Ή Burns: Cool the burn with running water for at least 10 minutes - never ice!
πŸ”Ή Choking: Encourage coughing first, then perform abdominal thrusts if needed.
πŸ”Ή CPR: Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest (100-120 beats per minute).

🩹 Keep your first aid kit stocked with: bandages, gauze, gloves, antiseptic wipes, and a rescue mask.

🧠 Pro tip: Take a certified first aid course - you'll gain confidence that could one day save a loved one's life. We have one starting on November 26 that you can register for! www.sospita.ca/events

When people take our Car Seat Basics workshop, they may recognize a mistake they made in the past. When this happens, it is important not to feel bad: car seats are complicated!

A great example is from many years ago, when I tried to install a car seat in my car to help transport a friend's child. I didn't follow the manual (I'm not sure I even had the manual!) but installed the seat using both the seatbelt and the universal anchor system (UAS), thinking it would be more secure. While either method is acceptable on its own, using both may affect how the seat performs in a collision - a fact that I learned when I became a Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST). Thankfully, nothing happened to the child while she was riding in my car!

The point though is that you can only do your best with the information that you have. If you would like more information on how to properly install and use a car seat, take our Car Seat Basics workshop this Saturday from 2-4pm! Register at www.sospita.ca/families-individuals

🦺 Creating a Safety Culture at Home

We often talk about "workplace safety culture," but your home needs one too!

Think of a home safety culture as a family habit - where everyone, from adults to kids, understands how to prevent accidents before they happen.

🏑 How to Build It:
πŸ”Ή Talk about safety together. Have quick "safety check-ins" - ask your kids what to do if the smoke alarm goes off or someone gets hurt.
πŸ”Ή Keep hazards visible. Store cleaning supplies and medications out of reach, check smoke alarms monthly, and review escape routes.
πŸ”Ή Model safe behavior. Children copy what they see - wear gloves when cleaning, use ladders safely, and explain why precautions matter.
πŸ”Ή Involve everyone. Let kids help test flashlights, build the first aid kit, or plan emergency contacts.

A safety-minded home helps everyone feel secure and confident - and it teaches lifelong habits of awareness and care.
