🧼 Stop Germs Before They Spread

Cold and flu season peaks in February, and simple habits can dramatically reduce how illness spreads at home and in the community.

🦠 Effective infection prevention starts with:
🔹 Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
🔹 Covering coughs and sneezes with your elbow, not your hands
🔹 Cleaning high-touch surfaces like door handles, phones, and light switches
🔹 Staying home when sick - even if symptoms feel mild

👶 Teach kids early:
Make handwashing part of routines - after school, before meals, and after coughing or sneezing.

🧠 Did you know? Many viruses can live on surfaces for hours or even days. Cleaning regularly helps break the chain of infection.

Healthy habits protect more than just your household - they protect your community.

🏡 Carbon Monoxide: The Invisible Risk in Your Home

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas that can build up without warning - especially during winter when homes are sealed tightly.

⚠️ Common sources include:
🔺Furnaces and boilers
🔺Gas stoves and fireplaces
🔺Blocked vents or chimneys
🔺Running vehicles in garages (even briefly)

🚨 Warning signs of CO exposure:
🔸Headache
🔸Dizziness
🔸Nausea
🔸Confusion or unusual sleepiness

🔧 Protect your family:
🔹 Install CO alarms on every level of your home and near sleeping areas
🔹 Test alarms monthly and replace batteries regularly
🔹 Have fuel-burning appliances serviced annually
🔹 Never run vehicles or fuel-powered tools in enclosed spaces
🔹 Ensure furnace vents are clear from snow

CO safety is simple - but it's critical.

🚗 Is Your Child Really Ready to Ditch the Booster?

Many parents are surprised to learn that age alone doesn't determine when a child is ready to move out of a booster seat. What matters most is proper seat belt fit.

👶 A booster is still needed if:
🔹 The lap belt rides up on the stomach instead of low on the hips
🔹 The shoulder belt touches the neck or face
🔹 Your child slouches or can't sit properly for the whole ride
🔹 Their feet don't touch the floor comfortably

🧠 Why this matters:
Adult seat belts are designed for adult bodies. Without a booster, a child's body isn't positioned correctly - increasing the risk of serious injury in a crash.

🚦 Quick check: If the belt doesn't sit low and snug across the hips and shoulder, the booster stays.

Safe transitions save lives - take the time to check fit, not just age.

❤️⚡ AEDs Save Lives - and You Don't Need to Be an Expert to Use One

When someone's heart suddenly stops, every second matters.
An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can restore a normal heart rhythm - and it's designed so anyone can use it.

🫀 Why AEDs are so important:
🔹 Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere - at home, at the rink, or at the grocery store
🔹 Survival drops by 7-10% for every minute without defibrillation
🔹 Using an AED within the first few minutes can double or triple survival rates

⚡ Here's the part many people don't realize:
AEDs talk you through every step. You cannot hurt someone by using one when it's indicated.

🚑 If someone collapses and isn't breathing normally:
1️⃣ Call 911
2️⃣ Start CPR
3️⃣ Use an AED as soon as it's available

🧠 Family safety tip: Take a moment to notice where AEDs are in places you visit often - community centres, gyms, schools, and arenas.

Knowing how - and being willing - to use an AED could save a life. All our first aid and CPR classes include AED training - sign up for a course today!
