AI is rapidly reshaping the future of care, with Canadian researchers leading the way.

University Health Network (UHN) has developed a publicly available AI foundation model trained on 1.5 million ECGs that can interpret heart rhythms, flag abnormalities, and predict changes in heart function with far less labelled data than traditional models require.

UHN’s ECG-FM has system-wide potential to help improve accuracy, reduce wait times and advance more equitable access to lifesaving cardiac care across Canada.

It's clear: Health must be at the centre of Canada’s AI strategy.

A cutting-edge app co-developed by Dr. Ayman Hassan at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre shows what’s possible when frontline expertise meets innovation.

In a region where vast distances, limited specialist access and variable transport infrastructure can mean life-altering delays, this tool is a game-changer. By predicting transport times, integrating diagnostic availability, and mapping the fastest access to treatment sites, the app empowers providers to make evidence-based, time-critical decisions which strengthen coordination across the system.

The NWO Navigate Stroke app is proof that AI can strengthen equity, access and quality of care. It's clear: Health should be at the center of Canada’s AI strategy.

Researchers at McMaster University have developed a simple, low-cost method for producing robust cell sheets in just five hours, a dramatic improvement over existing techniques that can take weeks. This advancement could have profound implications for Canada’s aging population and rising demand for tissue regeneration.

What makes this discovery especially promising is that it is already moving toward human clinical trials at Hamilton Health Sciences, supported by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Genome Canada. This is exactly the kind of Canadian-led innovation that can change lives if the clinical trial and commercialization pathways are strong enough to support it.

National leadership is critical to ensure innovations like this move from promising lab results to real-world patient care across the country.

A partnership between Give Back Health Innovation Foundation and Inteligex aims to accelerate a groundbreaking human cell therapy that has the potential to transform treatment for the 86,000 Canadians living with spinal cord injuries.

Moving from the bench to clinical trials is often where promising discoveries stall. Costs are high, timelines are long, and Canada’s clinical trials capacity faces significant gaps. Give Back’s first-of-its-kind funding model helps bridge this translation barrier by connecting philanthropists and investors with high-impact opportunities, ensuring innovations move beyond early discovery toward real-world testing and patient access.

Partnerships like this show what’s possible when we close the translation gap and support innovations through every stage of development. With the right national leadership, more Canadian discoveries can advance to clinical trials and ultimately reach the patients who need them most.

Yukon Hospitals ’ pioneering frostbite protocol is a clear example of how innovation can transform care across Canada.

Since its introduction in 2015, the protocol led by Dr. Alex Poole and Pharmacist Josianne Gauthier has cut amputation rates for the most severe frostbite cases from nearly 100% to 50%. That means fewer surgeries, fewer long-term disabilities, lower rehabilitation and prosthetic costs, and better quality of life for patients, especially in northern, rural and remote communities where access to specialized care is limited.

Now we need national leadership to help scale these successes across the country.

Réseau de santé Vitalité • Vitalité Health Network’s innovative approach to care has the power to transform access to primary care across the country, with its collaborative care centres projected to take 14,000 New Brunswickers off the primary-care waitlist.

Collaborative models like these are already improving wait times, easing system pressures, and giving families more options for high-quality, team-based care close to home. This initiative demonstrates what can be achieved when provinces and health organizations work together.

What is needed now is federal leadership to scale this approach system-wide.

Covenant Health’s new ED at the Misericordia Community Hospital makes it clear that strategic infrastructure investment directly improves access, patient experience, and system performance.

Built on time and on budget and three times the size of the old ED, the new facility has already seen a 20% increase in visits managed effectively. Yet, demand is rising faster than infrastructure can keep up. Even with a modernized ED, the Misericordia’s bed base remains insufficient to support its rapidly growing patient volume.

To meet the needs of a growing population, provinces, territories and health orgs need to work together so Phase 2 of this project, and other projects like this across the country, can get off the ground!

The Royal's Urgent Care Clinic will be a major step forward in improving access to mental health and addiction services & building a more responsive system.

At a time when emergency departments remain strained and the demand for mental health support continues to rise, investments in initiatives like this are essential. By providing a timely, specialized alternative to the ED, The Royal’s new clinic will help ensure people receive the right care at the right time while easing pressure on hospitals and improving system efficiency.

HealthCareCAN members are leading the way. Provinces, territories and health organizations need to work together so projects like this, that reflect local realities and align with national objectives for access and quality, can get off the ground!
