In order to be able to identify and recognize triggers in certain situations, a person has to listen to their mind and their body. By listening to one's physical sensations and reactions, it can allow for a better understanding of how and when the muscles tense or relax. As well as, there's the potential of increased awareness of the thoughts and opinions one has in situations. These recognitions can improve a person's understanding of themselves and environment.

Being able to understand the way one's body reacts in situations, allows for a person to utilize the most appropriate and effective coping strategies. The coping strategies that can be used include progress muscle relaxation, mindfulness and exercise. Each of the coping mechanisms, have a person focusing on the movement and muscles of the physical body. It creates awareness towards how the body moves and what the responses are of the body. This allows for an individual to improve on their body's responses to a situation.

It is sometimes easier for a person to believe in the negative, persistent and intrusive thought as opposed to a more balanced and intentional thought. It is why it is important to know which cognitive coping strategies can be most beneficial. These coping strategies can include challenging, externalization, rationalization and postponement. Each of these coping strategies, allows for an individual to be proactive in altering and adapting the thoughts to the situation. The body is an important tool to utilize when needing to assess one's response in and of a situation. It allows for one to gain knowledge and awareness to their physiological sensations. There's also the opportunity to recognize what triggers certain parts of the body to feel a certain way, while a situation is occurring.
