Conval-Aid started with a hockey buddy, a handshake, and a big idea.

In 1976, Don Ed was approached by a friend about partnering in a business to sell and rent wheelchairs in Ottawa.

At the time, the home health-aid industry was barely off the ground. Don had a full-time job, and his wife, Judi, was a full-time mother of two.

They said yes anyway.

The first Conval-Aid office was on Boyd Avenue: one desk, one filing cabinet, one phone. From those humble beginnings, they built something that would go on to serve Ottawa families for the next 50 years (and counting).

Every company has an origin story. Ours started with people who believed they could make a difference and were willing to figure it out as they went.

Some repairs carry more meaning than others.
When Marc brought us his late son’s wheelchair, Torrin (one of our Service Technicians) understood how important it was to get it working again.

He spent six months sourcing parts, troubleshooting a supplier, and eventually creating an in-house solution when none could be found.

“It meant a great deal to me that Torrin never gave up,” Marc shared.

It might be time to switch to aluminum.

Here’s how they compare:

🌧️ Weather Performance Aluminum won’t rot, warp, or splinter. Plus, it sheds snow & ice fast. Wood needs repainting, absorbs moisture, and can become unsafe over time.

đź’Ş Strength & Durability Aluminum ramps support up to 450 kg and can be moved or stored. Wood degrades with sun, moisture, and temperature swings.

⏱️ Installation Time Aluminum: installed in hours. Wood: 1-2+ days, plus permits and concrete footings.

🧹 Maintenance Aluminum = quick sweep + occasional tightening. Wood = yearly staining/repainting, and ongoing repairs.
