Research shows that continuous labor support is linked to shorter labors, fewer interventions, and better birth experiences.💪🏽

Doulas provide that support from the first contraction to the first moments after birth, giving consistent guidance, comfort, and reassurance to families every step of the way.

Doulas truly make all the difference!✨

As part of our February series, ‘Birth Support, Explained’, we are going back to basics on the power of doula care.🙌🏽 Stay tuned for more!

Another training finished. As a DONA International certified doula, I keep my skills up to date through continuing education on a regular basis.

Birth planning isn't about giving care providers a rigid set of plans. It is about exploring options and figuring out what the birthing person needs in order to have a positive and safe experience. The best "plans" are not rigid plans at all. They are "preferences" that can be flexible, with respectful care and true informed choice provided to the birthing person. Every birthing person's body and their baby is different and needs care that is tailored to them.

I love helping my clients come up with their birth preferences and then be with them on their birthing journey.

I will be offering a stand alone Birth Planning class soon for anyone to take, so if you aren't a birth or postpartum client, you can still benefit from my help with this.

What is your favourite local small business?

😘 How do you show you are sweet on small business?

👉 One of my favourite ways to show support for local businesses is to leave them a review on their Google listing or page, telling others about why I had a great experience and why they should consider shopping there, too! (Melissa)

I love being a part of our local doula community. We get together for coffee, breakfast and lots of talking / sharing the second Wednesday of every month at Local Heroes on Clyde. All local doulas welcome!

As a former member of Ottawa Valley Doula’s, and co-founder of it, it’s always good to connect with current members. Doulas’ contributions to new parents is tremendous, helping with becoming parents both in birthing and postpartum. A shoutout to Keegan, Gertrude, and Amy!

Great news that birthing people will be able to use the tub at the Almonte General Hospital again.

Immersion in water is a great comfort measure for labour.

After a long hiatus, the Almonte General Hospital labour tub is available for use!!! We’re so happy our clients will have this option again as water can be a great option for pain relief during labour! 🛀

This is important information to share. If you need help with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and/or pumping Lactation Care is a great local source for support.

Receiving free formula may feel good and it may seem kind, but it is actually not best practice. It can in fact undermine breastfeeding not to mention a parent's confidence.

Unless parents have made an informed decision to formula feed, formula should only be provided in hospital for medical reasons, and then only the volume appropriate for baby's stomach capacity. Need extra support? We can help » lactationcare.ca 💙💛

This is National Breastfeeding Week in Canada.

Sometimes I spend part of my shifts with new parents sterilizing bottles so they can focus on skin to skin time with their baby.

If you use this method, here are some tips:

1. Wash your bottles with soap and water while waiting for the water to boil.
2. Use tongs to place things into the water to avoid burning yourself.
3. Your bottles need to be at a rolling boil for 5 minutes.
4. Please please set a timer that you will hear from wherever you are in the house. When caring for a newborn it is easy to lose track of time and end up with melted / burned bottles.
5. Remove bottles using tongs and place on a clean bottle rack to dry.
6. I find using a microwave or electric sterilizer easier for most of my clients because they don't have to watch a boiling pot. This is something worth looking into.

I was at the Ottawa Hospital yesterday talking to student nurses about how doulas support their birthing patients. They loved hearing about how we can work as a team.

Happy New Year! When packing your bag for birthing in a hospital, include a roll of toilet paper from home. The toilet paper provided by the hospital is thin and rough - not what a parent who has just had a baby wants to use!
