November 17 is World Prematurity Day, an opportunity to raise awareness about preterm birth and the unique health challenges premature babies face. Preterm birth occurs in approximately 10% of pregnancies, so recognizing the signs of preterm labour is essential to getting the specialized care mother and baby might need.

The SOGC welcomes the IWK Foundation’s recent report highlighting critical gaps in women’s health care access and calling on the federal government to establish a National Women’s Health Strategy for Canada. The SOGC continues to advocate for efforts to close the gaps in women’s care by calling on the federal government to invest in maternal health research, a National Women’s Health Data Dashboard and a reduction in surgical wait times for obstetric and gynaecological procedures, among other priorities.

Women account for almost half the workforce in Canada, and they need to be healthy to stay in the workplace. Financing women’s health is an investment in the economic growth of Canada.

Menopause is experienced by 100 percent of women, and its symptoms have a profound impact on their wellbeing, quality of life and careers. In fact, according to the Menopause Foundation of Canada, one in ten women may leave the workforce due to unmanaged symptoms of menopause.

The SOGC welcomes today’s announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to remove broad ‘black box’ warnings from MHT products for menopause treatment and hopes that this step will further encourage women to explore MHT as a potential treatment option based on consultation with their physician.

SOGC president, Dr. Lynn Murphy-Kaulbeck, recently spoke with paNOW in Prince Albert, SK regarding the ongoing issues in accessing obstetrics and gynaecological care across Canada and specifically in Kamloops, B.C. following the resignation of seven OB-GYNs. She explained the pressure on OB-GYNs and emphasized the need to improve specialists’ mobility between provinces through a Pan-Canadian medical licensing, instead of relying on locum physicians to reduce the workload.
