The Canadian Institute of Planners is encouraged by many of the commitments in the federal budget that was released earlier this week, especially those focused on addressing Canada's housing crisis.

CIP welcomes the government's focus on non-market and supportive housing and the launch of the Build Communities Strong Fund, which supports the "whole-of-community" approach to housing projects. We endorse the government's emphasis on prefabricated and modular construction to accelerate housing supply and position Canada as a global leader in a growing industry.

CIP also notes the government's more flexible approach to development charges. While reductions remain a condition for accessing certain funding streams, this budget is a step toward recognizing that development charges aren't a cure-all for Canada's housing challenges.

Together with our nearly 10,000 members, CIP looks forward to continuing to work with all levels of government to ensure that these initiatives address distinct community needs, promote sustainability, and foster long-term resilience.
