Today is Rare Disease Day. 💜

In December 2023, our world changed forever. Our son was diagnosed with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Type 4 (SPG4) — a rare, progressive genetic disease with no cure and no treatment to stop it.

This journey has been heartbreaking. We are deeply grateful for the support surrounding us and for the strength we’ve found in a community we never expected to be part of.

Today, we stand with the 300+ million people worldwide living with rare diseases. Alone we are rare. Together we are strong. 💜

We are beyond honoured and excited to welcome Terry Pirovolakis to Jack’s Gala: Reaching for the Stars on May 30th at the Brookstreet Hotel in Ottawa!

Terry, cofounder of CureSPG50 Foundation, confronted his child’s SPG50 diagnosis in 2019. As a father determined to save his own son, he relentlessly fundraised to drive groundbreaking research to develop a cure for SPG50 - through his efforts he treated 3 children in 3 years, including his son. Terry went on to establish Elpida Therapeutics, a non-profit focusing on gene therapies for ultra-rare diseases with one mission: to save as many children as possible.

As a parent who fought to save his child from the debilitating effects of HSP, Terry paved the way for parents like us to fight to save ours. We are grateful to have him in our lives as a mentor and friend. We can’t wait to hear his powerful and inspiring talk at Jack’s Gala! 💫
