2025 Theme – Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials

In this period of turbulence and unpredictability, where many feel a growing sense of insecurity, disaffection and alienation, the theme of Human Rights Day is to reaffirm the values of human rights and show that they remain a winning proposition for humanity.

By bridging the gap between human rights principles and everyday experiences, we aim to spark awareness, inspire confidence and encourage collective action.

The campaign emphasizes that human rights are positive, essential and attainable.

Human rights are POSITIVE
They not only protect, they also bring joy, happiness and safety into daily life. Human rights are lived realities. They are in the food we eat, the air we breathe, the words we speak, the opportunities we pursue or the protections that keep us safe.

Human rights are ESSENTIAL
They are the essentials we all share, the common ground that unites us across differences of race, gender, belief, or background. In a world of uncertainty, human rights remain our everyday constants. When everything feels unstable, your right to safety, to speak freely and to participate in decisions that affect us, become the bedrock of our lives.

Human rights are ATTAINABLE
They begin with us, with the small, everyday choices we make from treating others with respect, speaking up against unfairness, and listening to those whose voices are often ignored. Everyday choices and voices matter more than you may realize; they build a culture of dignity and fairness around us. But human rights also depend on collective action, when communities, movements, and nations come together to demand justice and equality.

Human Rights Day is observed annually around the world on 10 December. It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Today is a day of remembrance, reflection, and renewed commitment to ending gender-based violence. Every December 6th, we come together to honour the 14 women killed in 1989 at École Polytechnique in Montreal.

We remember their names: Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, and Annie Turcotte.

Each of the victims had dreams, aspirations, and a future that was stolen by hate. Their deaths ignite a resolve in all of us to fight for a world where violence against women, girls, and gender-diverse people is unimaginable.

LiveWorkPlay celebrates International Volunteer Day (IVD) December 5, 2025

It’s International Volunteer Day and we’re sending a giant THANK YOU to our volunteers.

Your time and energy helps to advance our mission in Ottawa and beyond though your engagement with one-to-one matches, Friday Night meetups, our board of directors, employment task forces, and strategy groups.

Thanks for helping to build a community where everyone is welcome. We appreciate you, and we’re lucky to work alongside you.

International Volunteer Day, commonly known as IVD, is celebrated on 5 December every year. It started as an international observance mandated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. It is a day where volunteers are acknowledged and the spirit of volunteerism is promoted at the local, national and international levels. United Nations Volunteers joins IVD celebrations with UN Volunteers and all volunteers around the world—amplifying the importance of people-led solutions to our common challenges.

This year’s observance builds directly on the momentum of the Second World Summit for Social Development, held in Doha in 4-6 November 2025, where world leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building a just, inclusive and equitable world. LiveWorkPlay

It all started back in 1995, a small organization with a big dream: help the Ottawa community and the world to welcome people with intellectual disabilities to live, work, and play as valued citizens. Now in 2018, we are directly involved in the lives of more than 150 individuals with intellectual disabilities, but we also work with more than 200 employers and community partners, many of whom help us champion the benefits of inclusion and provide practical support to making positive changes. Family members have always been critical to our success, and they remain not only the primary partner in the lives of supported individuals, but provide key pathways to individuals and organizations in the community to join us! More than 150 volunteers support an incredible community meet-ups initiative, where people with and without disabilities get together across Ottawa every Friday night to share in a show, a beer, skating on the canal, and more! Interested? There’s lots to learn here on our page but please do visit our full website http://liveworkplay.ca and if you are really into history, we even have a book “The Courage To Fail, The Will To Succeed” http://liveworkplay.ca/courage If you are an individual, a family member, or perhaps a diligent member of the social services community investigating placement options, please note that LiveWorkPlay is not a “program” or a landlord. We do not own properties, and we do not host congregated programs (like day programs or sheltered workshops). We help people find homes of their own in the community (such as a rental apartment) and to build the life they want to live in the community (like a job, friends, and recreation and other fun in the community to enjoy alongside other citizens). You can learn more here http://liveworkplay.ca/registration/ If you are interested in volunteering please see http://liveworkplay.ca/volunteers/ and if you are an employer looking for access to great workers see http://liveworkplay.ca/gotjobs/ Last but not least, donations are wonderful: http://liveworkplay.ca/to-donate/
