Ingrown toenails are more than just uncomfortable — they can become painful and inflamed quickly if not managed early 👣
As an Ottawa foot care nurse, I see this often, and the good news is many ingrown toenails can be prevented or treated conservatively with proper care 💜
What causes ingrown toenails?
• Improper nail trimming ✂️ (cutting too short or rounding the corners)
• Tight footwear 👟
• Thick or curved nail shape
• Repeated pressure or trauma
• Reduced vision or flexibility
• Certain medical conditions
How to help prevent them:
✔️ Trim nails straight across
✔️ Avoid cutting into the corners
✔️ Don’t cut nails too short
✔️ Wear properly fitted shoes with room in the toe box 👞
✔️ Seek care early if you notice redness, pressure, or pain
Please avoid digging into the nail at home — this often makes things worse ⚠️
If you already have an ingrown toenail:
Nurse-led care may include:
• Careful reduction of the offending nail edge
• Application of nail bracing (a non-invasive technique that helps guide the nail to grow properly over time)
• Skin protection and pressure management 🩹
Regular follow-ups every 2–4 weeks can help prevent recurrence and support healthy nail growth 📅
If redness, swelling, drainage, or pain worsens — or if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation — prompt medical follow-up is important 🩺
