Ingrown toenails are more than just uncomfortable — they can become painful and inflamed quickly if not managed early 👣

As an Ottawa foot care nurse, I see this often, and the good news is many ingrown toenails can be prevented or treated conservatively with proper care 💜

What causes ingrown toenails?
• Improper nail trimming ✂️ (cutting too short or rounding the corners)
• Tight footwear 👟
• Thick or curved nail shape
• Repeated pressure or trauma
• Reduced vision or flexibility
• Certain medical conditions

How to help prevent them:
✔️ Trim nails straight across
✔️ Avoid cutting into the corners
✔️ Don’t cut nails too short
✔️ Wear properly fitted shoes with room in the toe box 👞
✔️ Seek care early if you notice redness, pressure, or pain

Please avoid digging into the nail at home — this often makes things worse ⚠️

If you already have an ingrown toenail:
Nurse-led care may include:
• Careful reduction of the offending nail edge
• Application of nail bracing (a non-invasive technique that helps guide the nail to grow properly over time)
• Skin protection and pressure management 🩹

Regular follow-ups every 2–4 weeks can help prevent recurrence and support healthy nail growth 📅

If redness, swelling, drainage, or pain worsens — or if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation — prompt medical follow-up is important 🩺

Early care makes a big difference 💜

🦶 PPE is NOT optional — it’s a policy issue.

When it comes to foot care nursing, wearing PPE isn’t enough.
It must be clearly documented, standardized, and enforced through your Policies & Procedures Manual and your Reprocessing Manual.

Why? Because PPE protects:
✔️ Your clients
✔️ YOU as the provider
✔️ Your license and professional reputation
✔️ Your business during inspections, audits, or complaints

📘 Your PPE policy should clearly outline:
• What PPE is required during foot care client care
• What PPE is required during medical instrument reprocessing
• When a surgical mask vs N95 (fit tested) is appropriate
• Approved eye protection (goggles or face shield)
• Use of medical-grade gloves
• Use of disposable or reusable long-sleeve medical gowns
• How PPE is donned, doffed, disposed of, or laundered safely

🧼 Your Reprocessing Manual must also address PPE, because reprocessing is a high-risk activity. Exposure to contaminants, sharps, and biological material makes proper PPE essential — and inspectors WILL look for this alignment.

🚨 A missing or vague PPE policy is one of the most common gaps seen in foot care practices.

If it’s not written, standardized, and followed consistently —
👉 it’s considered non-compliant, even if you’re “doing the right thing.”

This infographic visually reinforces what every foot care nurse should already have documented in their manuals.

Strong policies create:
✔️ Safer care
✔️ Confident clinicians
✔️ Defensible practices

✨ Why Foot Care Matters ✨

A client came in with what they thought was a painful corn.
Once we took a closer look, it turned out to be something more serious — a wound hiding underneath.

Because it was caught early, we were able to provide guidance and help arrange appropriate home wound care. 💙
Fast forward 3 months, and the wound is fully healed. 🙌

This is why foot care nursing is so important. What looks “small” on the surface can make a huge difference to someone’s health and mobility when properly assessed.

We’re incredibly proud of the work we do and the role foot care nurses play in keeping people safe, mobile, and comfortable every day. 🦶💪

🦶 Why Medical Foot Care Nurses Do NOT Soak Feet
AFCN Learning Institute | Clinical Education

Foot soaking is still commonly associated with salon pedicures—but in medical foot care, it is not evidence-based practice.

At AFCN Learning Institute, we teach nurses why soaking feet is contraindicated and how dry care supports safer outcomes.

🚫 Why foot care nurses do NOT soak feet:

• Skin maceration & breakdown
Soaking over-softens the skin, increasing the risk of tearing, fissures, and post-treatment breakdown.

• Impaired clinical assessment
Water exposure turns the skin white and swollen, making it difficult to distinguish:
– Viable vs compromised tissue
– Callus vs maceration
– Early wounds, fissures, or infection

Accurate assessment requires dry, intact skin.

• Increased infection risk
Warm, moist environments promote bacterial and fungal growth—especially dangerous for clients with diabetes, vascular disease, or immunocompromise.

• Burn & injury risk
Clients with neuropathy may not feel water temperature, increasing the risk of thermal injury.

• Delayed healing & poorer outcomes
Macerated skin is weaker, more fragile, and slower to heal if injured.

• Outdated, cosmetic-based practice
Soaking originates from salon culture—not modern, medical, evidence-based foot care.

✅ Best practice medical foot care is:
✔ Dry
✔ Precise
✔ Assessment-driven
✔ Preventative
✔ Evidence-based

At AFCN Learning Institute, we train nurses to practice safe, professional, medically sound foot care—not cosmetic routines.

📘 Education matters.
🩺 Assessment matters.
