I write this article and politically view as both a political intellectual and a proud citizen of Somaliland, speaking with the voice of reason and the voice of the people. Today marks an important moment in our history one that deserves recognition, reflection, and global attention.
Somaliland welcomes and congratulates the State of Israel for taking a historic and courageous step toward recognizing Somaliland. This decision represents more than a bilateral gesture; it is a recognition of reality on the ground. It acknowledges Somaliland’s long standing commitment to peace, stability, democratic governance, and regional security in the Horn of Africa.
For more than three decades, Somaliland has existed as a peaceful, self-governing, and democratic entity. Without international recognition, Somaliland has nonetheless built functioning state institutions, conducted free and fair elections, maintained internal security, and upheld the rule of law. Our people chose peace over chaos, reconciliation over revenge, and cooperation over conflict.
Somaliland is not a burden on the international system; it is a contributor. It plays a vital role in regional security, counterterrorism efforts, maritime safety in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and the protection of global trade routes. Somaliland stands firmly for peaceful coexistence among peoples, religions, and nations. It is part of the global architecture of peace and stability.
In contrast, Somalia continues to struggle with chronic insecurity, political instability, and the presence of internationally recognized terrorist organizations. Rather than acting as a stabilizing force, Somalia has, for decades, been a source of regional and international concern—exporting insecurity, extremism, and humanitarian crises beyond its borders. This is not an accusation driven by hostility, but an observation grounded in reality and acknowledged by the international community itself.
Recognizing Somaliland is not an act against Somalia; it is an act for peace, truth, and justice. The international community must stop ignoring the facts on the ground and must abandon outdated political assumptions that have failed to deliver stability in the Horn of Africa.
Therefore, I call upon the nations of the world especially democratic states, peace-loving governments, and international institutions to follow Israel’s historic step and formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland. Recognition will strengthen regional security, encourage democratic values, support counterterrorism efforts, and reward a people who have chosen peace through their own sacrifice and determination.
This call comes not only from political scholars and policymakers, but from the ordinary citizens of Somaliland farmers, students, elders, women, youth, and entrepreneurs who believe in coexistence, dignity, and international cooperation. Our message is simple and clear: Somaliland exists, Somaliland is peaceful, and Somaliland deserves recognition
