St. John Ambulance FD - Ottawa

St. John Ambulance FD - Ottawa St. John Ambulance provides the most comprehensive, standards-based first aid training programs and products for the workplace, the home, and the community.

John Ambulance has been ensuring the health, safety, and quality of life of Canadians at home, work, and play for more than 140 years. We are Canada’s largest and most trusted provider of first aid training and the only national first aid training provider recognized in every Canadian province and territory. Each year, we issue approximately 550,000 first aid and CPR certificates to Canadians across the country. In the workplace, St. John Ambulance is the provider of choice for leading national corporations including Dollarama, Air Canada, Via Rail, Apple, and many more. Today, many regulators use St. John Ambulance first aid training courses to set the standard by which other first-aid trainers operate.

Thanks to our volunteers who showed their respect for veterans and serving members of Canada's Forces by providing medical support at the National Remembrance Day ceremony downtown and at a smaller service at the Vanier Legion. Our Council Commissioner laid the St. John Ambulance wreath with our national CEO.

Once again, SJA FD - Ottawa appreciates the invitation to compete in OMFRC with our SJA ON Council cousins! After hosting regionals earlier this year, we sent fantastic teams to the GTA to compete for the big prize! Our people easily stand out in our hi-vis vests in these photos! And we took 2nd in the MFR division!

We’re honoured to share that St. John Ambulance is being awarded the Order of the Buffalo Hunt by Premier Wab Kinew for our service during this summer’s wildfire emergency.

This incredible recognition belongs to all our volunteers and staff from Manitoba and across Canada who came to support.

In the words of our ERU Coordinator:

"This past weekend, the St. John Ambulance FD - Ottawa Emergency Response Unit (ERU) force generated 15 new members following their participation in onboarding training and Exercise ABLE RESPONDER.

Over the course of two days, candidates received introduction to emergency management lessons and supplemental medical first responder training, then took part in a culminating exercise that saw them deploy a command post, triage area, and treatment location. They subsequently dealt with several patient scenarios concurrently while in various leadership positions, receiving mentorship from the leadership staff throughout the exercise.

Overall, it was a highly successful exercise, validating our ability to deploy in an austere context with the tools needed to respond. I am confident now that, should the call come in, we could deploy a team as needed either within the Ottawa region or elsewhere in Canada in support of a community emergency within the Humanitarian Workforce framework.

It has been a busy few weeks for me professionally with some career changes, but from a volunteer perspective, I have had the October 4-5 weekend circled on my calendar for quite some time. It has been an arduous road since taking lead of the ERU with the team this past March. The weekend that just transpired validated those efforts, and I can unabashedly say that I am proud of the team and all who have supported us."

SJA FD (Ottawa) recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We offer our support to FNMI communities and are thankful for opportunities to work with them to build a better future.

Today, we pause for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, honouring the survivors of residential schools, the children that never came home, and their families and communities.

Today is also known as Orange Shirt Day, inspired by the story of residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad. Now, wearing an orange shirt has become a symbol of hope, reconciliation, and a commitment to a better future.

***
