Wow... Really goes to show how "just checking" your phone can lead to some serious injuries to people inside and outside your vehicle
🚗💥 How Far Does Your Car Really Travel When You Look Away?
👀 "It's just a quick glance..."
But even at city speeds, distracted driving can turn a short look into a long, dangerous distance.
⚙️ Stopping distance = Reaction distance + Braking distance
Let's do the math 👇
🛣️ At 50 km/h, your vehicle travels about 13.9 metres per second (roughly 3 car lengths every second!).
✅ If you're paying attention:
Average reaction time = 1.5 seconds
Reaction distance = 13.9 × 1.5 = 20.8 metres
Average braking distance = about 25 metres
🔹 Total stopping distance = ~45 metres
That's about half a soccer field - even when alert!
📱 Now add distraction:
Looking at your phone for 2 seconds = 13.9 × 2 = 27.8 metres traveled before you even react.
💥 That extra glance means your total stopping distance can jump from 45 metres to over 70 metres - and that can easily be the difference between a close call and a collision.
🚦 Keep your eyes up. The text, the notification, the playlist - it can wait.
