Living with TMJ discomfort? Small daily habits can make a big difference.

DO:
✅ Sit tall—good posture reduces jaw strain, especially while eating
✅ Keep your teeth slightly apart and lips closed when at rest

What can I expect from my Pelvic Floor Assessment?

During your initial visit, your Physiotherapist will conduct an assessment which includes a detailed history of your bladder, bowel, gynecological, and sexual health as well as a physical examination.

The physical examination typically has both an external and internal component.

👉 The external component can involve an assessment of posture, breathing, low back, hips, SI joints, abdomen, functional movements, gait/impact, and/or external pelvic floor.

👉 The internal component consists of an examination of your pelvic floor vaginally and/or rectally, which is the gold standard for assessing the pelvic floor. This assessment is looking at the tone, strength, endurance, coordination, and tenderness of your pelvic floor.

You do not need to choose to participate in an internal exam on the first visit or at all throughout your Physiotherapy treatment if it is not something you are comfortable with. Assessment and treatment is based around your comfort and consent and your Physiotherapist will work with you each step of the way. An effective treatment plan can still be provided through a whole-body approach centered around your goals.

Today's Terminlogy Tip Tuesday is all about ✨Balance✨

Balance refers to the ability of an individual to maintain their center of gravity within their base of support during static and dynamic activities.

In Physiotherapy, balance is often assessed and treated to improve functional mobility, reduce falls risk, and enhance overall quality of life. Treatment may involve exercises to improve strength, coordination, and proprioception, as well as environmental modifications and assistive devices to support safe and independent movement.

Balance can also be addressed in athletes looking to enhance their balance and proprioception in sport specific movements. Tiny stabilizing muscles often get over looked and under worked in the training process of athletes. Sometimes as we train these stability mucles and proprioception through rehabilitating an injury, we get a bonus enhancement of sport performance. Almost any athlete could use more balance and stability work in the training program.

Hockey players📣 Hockey season is back in full swing so we thought it would be a good idea to share the most common hockey related injuries to look out for.

🏒 Knee Injuries - Knee injuries are the most common injury in hockey. Knee injuries can be everything from imbalances in the muscles around the knee to trauma related ligament injuries such as ACL sprains.

🏒Quad or Hamstring Strains - Muscle or tendon strains occur when the muscle or tendon is stretched beyond its normal range of motion, resulting in some minor to major pulling or tearing. These are common in these leg muscles as a result of skating actions and quick stops and starts.

🏒 Shoulder Injuries - Shoulder injuries such as rotator cuff strains or AC joint sprains are common in hockey as a result of the deceleration forces in shooting or impact injuries of players hitting the boards, the ice or another player.

🏒 Groin Strains & Pulls - Groin strains and pulls are a common occurrence on the rink as a result of over use or over stretch of the adductor or hip flexor muscle groups.

🏒 Ankle sprains - High ankle sprains are most common in a skate when the blade is planted and the player twists, causing the ligament up high in the ankle to be pulled.

The best ways to avoid common hockey injuries are have a well-developed injury prevention training program and to have a good Physio or Athletic Therapist on speed dial!

A good exercise program can minimize muscle imbalances and ensure strength in not only the major mover muscle groups, but also the smaller stabilizing muscle groups.

Regular Physio sessions can help keep you well aligned, moving well and prevent things from getting too tight! You can book regular maintenance recovery work or book when you need to address problems that start to creep up.

Let us be your Physio/AT on speed dial! (or late night online booking works too 😉)

We haven't done a Terminology Tuesday in a little while so here we go! 👇

Atrophy is a condition characterized by the wasting away or loss of muscle tissue due to disuse, injury, or disease. In Physiotherapy, atrophy is often addressed through exercises and other interventions aimed at promoting muscle growth and preventing further deterioration.

Our Story

We, the owners of Inertia Physio+, Andrew and Sarah Peters, are a husband and wife team consisting of Physiotherapist and Athletic Therapist, respectively. We each have over 15 years of experience in our fields and have been residing and providing services in the Kanata/Stittsville area for over 10 years. Throughout our lives, we have been dedicated to being athletes, students, therapists, and helping people. We are also the proud parents of two extraordinary children.

With this clinic, we are following our dream of creating a space where practitioners and patients can thrive and be their best selves, thereby dedicating themselves to the things in life that bring them the greatest happiness. It is our hope that our clinic will offer you an escape from your busy lives and sports and provide a place where you can truly let go of, and heal from, pain and injuries. We believe in finding and treating the cause of your symptoms, and are not content to treat only your symptoms.

Our goal is simple – to provide the highest quality of therapeutic care, while making a positive difference in people’s lives.
