🧐 Did you know that the “s” sound can be produced in 2 different ways? While some people naturally place the tip of their tongue UP near the alveolar ridge (gums near the upper front teeth), others place their tongue tip DOWN on their lower gums/teeth.

Both are valid, as long as the air is coming down the centre of the tongue rather than the sides.

🗣️✨ How do we make 𝘃𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀? It all comes down to tongue position, lip shape, and vocal cord vibration!

👅 𝗧𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 & 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Vowel sounds change depending on how high or low the tongue is in the mouth and whether it's more forward or back. For example, “ee” (as in see) is made with a high, forward tongue, while “aw” (as in saw) has a low, back tongue position.

👄 𝗟𝗶𝗽 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲: Our lips also help shape certain vowels! Rounded lips create sounds like “o” (as in go) or “oo” (as in moon), while unrounded lips give us sounds like “ee” and “a” (as in cat).

🎤 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗻! Unlike some consonants, all vowels are voiced, meaning our vocal cords vibrate to create sound.

🔍 𝗩𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹 𝗘𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝘀? If a child has unclear vowels or frequently substitutes one vowel for another, it could indicate difficulty with motor planning for speech. Speech therapy can help build accuracy and confidence!

🌟 How to Support Your Child When They Stutter 🌟

It can be tricky to know how to react when your child stutters. Here are three simple yet powerful strategies to help your child feel supported and confident while communicating:

1️⃣ Maintain Eye Contact: Stay calm and keep eye contact. This shows your child that you’re listening and not uncomfortable with their stutter.

2️⃣ Wait It Out: Resist the urge to interrupt or finish their words. Let them take their time and express themselves fully.

3️⃣ Focus on the Content: Pay attention to what your child is saying rather than how they are saying it. Acknowledge the message, not the stutter, and encourage them to keep sharing their thoughts!

👄 Is your child getting really good at repeating their speech therapy words back to you when you sit down to practice or ask them to repeat, but they don’t say them on their own in conversations with you?

Our favourite trick to build more independence is to be your child’s echo! When you hear them say a word with a speech error they’ve been working on, try repeating what they said (the way they said it) and wait. This will help as it will give them some time to figure out HOW to fix the word without being given the answer.

Of course, if you try this once or twice and they’re not able to correct the word, you can jump in with more support:

💬 Give a choice: “Is it a “pider” or a “spider?””
💬 Give a reminder: “Don’t forget your snake sound.”
💬 Give a model: “You’re trying to say sssssspider.”

We also don’t recommend doing this all day but perhaps choosing one time of day when this might be a focus (e.g. during dinner time).

This might not be appropriate for ALL children in speech therapy. Ask your child’s speech pathologist to be sure!
