Welcome to Pretoria Bridge Dental. We’re proud to have been a family-focused practice here in Downtown Ottawa since the 1950s.

Through thoughtful communication and thorough examination, we take the time to meet each patient’s individual needs. Our mission statement really says it all: We offer a warm and inviting atmosphere, where patients’ dental concerns and goals are addressed. Through education, communication, and modern technology, the opportunity for optimal oral health is provided. With our longstanding reputation for providing gentle, conscientious care, we have become a preferred practice for many Ottawa families. We know it can be a challenge to bring small children to a dental appointment, so we have a play zone for children in our waiting area, as well televisions in our operatory (and in the waiting area) for entertainment. In order to connect with all of our patients, some of our staff members are able to offer service in both English and French.

We’re proud to offer at-home teeth whitening with custom-made trays for a safer, more effective whitening process. The trays that come in a drugstore teeth-whitening kit are not designed for your unique mouth, which means the whitening solution may work unevenly — and may leak out and irritate your gums.

People living with diabetes are more prone to gum disease. In fact, 22% of people with diabetes also have gum disease. Treatment, such as dental cleaning, can help combat gum disease and may help decrease blood sugar levels.

Somewhere between the ages of 17 and 21, most young adults experience the eruption of their third molars (also known as wisdom teeth).

If wisdom teeth come in properly and there’s room for them in your mouth, they can help you chew. But crowded or partially-erupted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infections, tooth decay, and cysts, in which case it’s best to have them removed for your own comfort and safety.

If you do wind up keeping your wisdom teeth past your mid to late twenties, we’ll continue to monitor them to make sure they don’t cause problems down the road.

Flossing can be tricky with orthodontics. It can rip or stretch on metal brackets and bands, and it can be difficult to thread under the wires and appliances.
Luckily, there is specialty floss designed for people with orthodontics. There is extra-strong floss that won’t break going around a bracket, floss threaders that have a stiff end for slipping through narrow areas, and even spongy expanding floss for cleaning around appliances.

We like to say that dental labs combine art and science to make happy smiles. Dental labs work with dentists to create dental restorations such as crowns, veneers and bridges, along with dentures and orthodontic appliances.

Every patient’s smile is unique. To create natural-looking and functional restorations, dental labs need a lot of information from your dentist, such as dental impressions, images, and dental records. Lab technicians use this information to determine the shape, fit, and colour of the restoration. Then they create the restoration from an array of materials, including dental ceramics, precious metals, and advanced composites. Once the restoration is complete, we’ll book you in for an appointment to check it for fit and appearance and then place it in your mouth.

A dental bridge — also called a fixed bridge — is used to restore missing teeth. The bridge is made of an artificial tooth (or teeth) and two crowns. The natural teeth on either side of the gap are shaped to accept the crowns, and then the crowns are attached. More than 30% of babies grind their teeth intermittently but it’s nothing to be concerned about. Some experts think that babies grind their teeth when they are teething, have an earache or an allergy, or they might just be testing out their new teeth. However, if grinding becomes a habit and continues into childhood, be sure to let us know.
