This , we’re highlighting research that’s redefining mental illness treatment by harnessing the power of exercise, innovation, and cutting‑edge neuroscience.

At The Royal, our scientists are looking at how exercise helps the brain in people living with depression — from youth whose brains are still developing to adults with difficult-to-treat depression.

Art became Michael’s anchor during some of his hardest days. What began as quiet sketches in hospital hallways grew into a powerful record of resilience, faith, and healing. Today, Michael is gifting his artwork to the people and place that supported him—hoping others who are struggling will feel seen, understood, and not alone.

Across research, clinical care, leadership, lived‑experience roles, and every corner of our organization, women are driving discoveries that bring hope — and delivering care that changes lives.

At The Royal's Research Institute, 12 women scientists, 30 researchers, 59 research staff, and 46 trainees and students are leading advancements across mental illness and addiction research.

As we mark , we’re proud to highlight the wide range of research areas where women at The Royal are shaping the future — like brain stimulation and rapid‑acting treatments for depression, innovative brain‑imaging techniques, sleep and mental health, youth wellbeing in digital spaces, cognitive functioning in psychiatric disorders, and research that deepens understanding of equity, culture, and gender in mental health.

To all the women across The Royal — your expertise, compassion, and leadership are helping people in our community and beyond reclaim their lives from mental illness and addiction. Thank you for everything you do. Happy International Women’s Day.

February is Heart Month – a time to care not only for our physical hearts, but for the emotional connections that help us feel safe and comforted.

One in four seniors aged 85 and older is living with dementia in Canada – a condition that can take away connection, stability and comfort. Thanks to donor support, The Royal is helping uphold dignity in care by providing HUG companions to patients living with dementia.

These plush, sensory companions are weighted and feature a gentle “heartbeat” to mimic real human connection. They're proven to help reduce anxiety and loneliness.

Sometimes, the smallest heartbeat can make the biggest difference.

Major milestone: Construction is now underway on The Royal’s new Urgent Care Clinic.

Opening this spring at our Carling Avenue campus, the clinic will offer timely, specialized, low‑barrier support for people experiencing a mental health crisis — helping reduce pressure on emergency departments and improving access to care when it’s needed most.

This purpose‑built space, developed with input from patients, families, and community partners, reflects our commitment to increasing access to specialized mental-health services across Ottawa.

Our Black History Month Film Screening & Panel sparked vital conversations on inequities in health care and the Ottawa Declaration on Black Health.

Grateful to our extraordinary panelists whose insight, honesty, lived and living experience shed light on inequities in health care and the transformative work of the Ottawa Declaration on Black Health. Their voices challenged us, inspired us, and reminded us that meaningful change requires all of us.

A film. A conversation. A call to action. Let’s carry this momentum forward—advocating, amplifying, and acting to advance equity in our community.

Young people are spending more time online than ever before — yet many digital platforms still lack the safety guardrails needed to truly support their mental health and well‑being.

A new five‑year research project at The Royal, led by Dr. Tanya Halsall in collaboration with youth investigator Oleksandr Makeikin, aims to change that.

Supported by a $1.5 million Canadian Institutes of Health Research Healthy Youth Team grant, this initiative will generate the youth‑centered evidence to help shape policies that protect children’s rights and hold tech companies accountable for safer, healthier online spaces.

By examining the systems, business practices, and inequities that contribute to online harm, the research team will co‑create solutions with young people to meaningfully improve digital environments and support mental health.
