Can you rearrange the pictures from easiest to hardest?

Our sense of balance depends on 3 different sources of sensory information:
- our visual system (eyes)
- our vestibular system (ears)
- our somatosensory system (joints, muscles and tendons)

Our visual system exerts the strongest influence on maintaining balance, so closing our eyes results in the most challenging balance exercise.

Therefore, the correct sequence of images is A → C → B.

Max Pacioretty has seemingly torn his Achilles tendon again. Our physiotherapist, Abed ( ) explains why:

Soft tissue (muscle, tendon, ligament, etc.) injuries are notoriously difficult to rehabilitate properly due to their need for appropriate loading/stressing of the injured tissue. Achilles tendon ruptures typically carry a timeline of 12 months, with history indicating 18-24 months may be more appropriate to perform at the same level again.

While the severity of Pacioretty’s initial right Achilles tendon injury (in August 2022) is unknown, he underwent surgery and was given a recovery timeline of 6 months. This shorter timeline may be due to a partial tear (vs. a complete rupture) and/or due to the (lack of) physical demand on the ankle when playing hockey (vs. running and jumping sports, like volleyball or basketball).

Pacioretty made his return earlier this month, before the 5-month mark of his projected timeline. Now, he may be looking at a significantly longer time away.

While an early recovery and quick return to sport is often celebrated, the priority should always be the long-term health of the individual.

What does a defibrillator do? Our physiotherapist, Abed () explains:

Damar Hamlin survived a cardiac arrest thanks to a quick response from the medical staff and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly begins to beat in an abnormal/irregular rhythm or stops beating altogether. As a result, inadequate blood is pumped to the brain, leading to death within minutes if there is no intervention.

A defibrillator delivers an electrical current, which stops the heart from beating and thereby ends the irregular rhythm. The sinoatrial (SA) node of the heart, which initiates the electrical signals (shown in yellow) that cause a heart to beat, can then resume its function for the “rebooted” heart.

Please note that a cardiac arrest is not the same as a myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Tua Tagovailoa suffered two significant brain injuries in less than a week.

On Sunday, Tua exhibited clear signs of head trauma after a hit, as he repeatedly shook his head before ultimately collapsing to the ground. After the game, the Dolphins claimed the cause was an injury to his back and not his head.

Last night, Tua once again exhibited clear signs of head trauma, as he experienced a fencing response. Based on multiple research studies, a fencing response involves unusual positioning of the hands (arms and hands may be fully flexed/curled or fully extended/straightened) immediately following a concussion and is a sign of moderate-to-severe brain injury.

Returning to play following an injury requires careful progression of activities based on research and guided by an athlete's symptoms. Following such practices are even more important with concussions, where the adverse effects of returning too quickly can jeopardize the athlete's long-term health.

It is incredibly sad, worrisome and infuriating to see Tua be failed by multiple people, including health professionals, who should have known better than to keep him in the game on Sunday, let alone clear him to take the field four days later.

What causes muscle cramps? Abed () breaks it down.

Products like Gatorade and Powerade are commonly consumed by athletes across all levels of sport. They are marketed as drinks that are rich in electrolytes since it is widely believed that dehydration and electrolyte imbalance cause cramps.

However, research indicates that this is not true because cramps have been observed in athletes whose hydration and salt levels are high. Furthermore, static stretching, which obviously does not involve the intake of fluids or electrolytes, is backed by research as an effective tool to reduce the effects of muscle cramps.

The prevailing theory currently involves poorer performance of the body's neuromuscular (communication between nerve and muscle) control due to fatigue. Once an athlete's muscles are tired, the likelihood of cramping increases, especially if the muscle in question crosses two joints. As such, the calf, the quadriceps and the hamstrings are muscle groups commonly affected by cramping.

There are many factors that can affect the likelihood of suffering from cramps, but the most likely predictor is a history of cramps.

Sports equipment with : How can sports bras help with athletic performance?

Sports bras are often overlooked when discussing essential sports equipment, with 17% of women reporting poor breast support to be a barrier to exercise.

A poorly fitted sports bra affects athletes by altering their centre of gravity, which impairs balance and increases the likelihood of back strains.

Prior to winning the 2022 Euro Cup, the England national women's soccer team consulted with a biomechanics research group. The researchers, who focus on breast health, asked the athletes to exercise braless and then again in a variety of sports bras.

Research shows that sports bras can improve running mechanics, lower heart rate and increase breathing efficiency, all of which helped to reduce fatigue. More specifically, bras that support each breast separately have been found to be better than the sports bras commonly worn (where the left and right breast are compressed together against the chest wall).

Anatomy with Abed ( )

The serratus anterior is also commonly known as the boxer's muscle.

The muscle originates from each of the first 8-9 ribs, which cause the appearance of a serrated saw blade. The muscle fibres then travel around the rib cage towards the back before attaching at the inner border of the scapula (shoulder blade).

The serratus anterior helps with moving the shoulder blade forward and upward, during movements such as a punch. As such, they are an important (but often overlooked) aspect of shoulder rehabilitation.

Injury Report with Abed ( )

Why has Chet Holmgren already been ruled out for the season?

The Oklahoma City Thunder revealed yesterday that Chet is out for the year due to a "Lisfranc injury" in his right foot. Named after a French surgeon in the 1800s who first noted the injury, Lisfranc injuries can vary in regards to the structures affected.

In the case of Chet, it is believed he suffered a rupture (full tear) of the Lisfranc ligament, which is found on the top of the foot between the medial cuneiform (bone in the midfoot) and the 2nd metatarsal (base of the 2nd toe).

Once the Lisfranc ligament ruptures, bodyweight causes a large gap to form between the 1st and 2nd metatarsals because the 2nd metatarsal collapses (foot arch no longer present) and moves towards the outside of the foot.

Rehabilitation of Lisfranc ruptures typically require extensive surgery, where a plate is inserted to support the arch of the foot. Since the arch is responsible for propulsion during walking and running, it is common to be non-weight-bearing for 2-3 months following the surgery in order to give the ligament sufficient time to recover.
