Internationally trained are vital to patient care in Canada — but the path to licensure remains long, costly, and inconsistent.

Today at , CPhA is calling for coordinated national action to make the process fairer, faster, and more consistent across provinces:

➡️ Dedicated federal funding for bridging and readiness programs.
➡️ Investment in expanding pharmacy education capacity across Canada.
➡️ Greater consistency and transparency across provinces.
➡️ Collaboration to improve mobility and harmonize scope of practice.

11/06/2025

Today, CPhA’s Dr. Sadaf Faisal is appearing before to discuss how immigration policy impacts Canada’s health workforce, and the barriers internationally trained face.

This is a critical issue for the pharmacy profession for several reasons:

➡️ Canada is facing a pharmacist shortage that’s projected to nearly double over the next decade.
➡️ 35% of pharmacists practising in Canada were trained internationally — the highest proportion among any health profession.
➡️ Internationally trained pharmacists are essential to maintaining access to care across the country.
➡️ Our domestic training capacity isn’t keeping up, with limited seats in pharmacy programs nationwide.

Addressing these challenges means helping internationally trained pharmacists join the workforce faster and expanding pharmacy education at home.
