PETITION TO THE MINISTER OF HEALTH

Whereas:

• Health Canada is proposing to significantly change natural health product (NHPs) regulations. We rely on NHPs, which include basic everyday products such as supplements, toothpaste, vitamins, probiotics, and mineral SPF, as part of our proactive healthcare;

• If we don't act immediately, consumer prices will rise significantly, and consumer choice will decline drastically, when inflation is at an all-time high and access to healthcare is at an all-time low;

• Health Canada recently proposed new and significant fees to import, manufacture, and sell NHPs at the same time they are implementing new labelling laws;

• This is unfair, unrealistic, and so costly to industry that it will force many small to medium-sized businesses to shut down Canadian operations;

• The burden of these costs for those that can afford the changes will be passed down to the consumer, and these are not changes or fees Canadians can afford;

• Increasing fees and additional labelling does not promote safety for taking NHPs, it makes products more expensive; and

• In fact, this overregulation will force consumers to seek out products online which could lead people purchasing non-compliant, unregulated NHPs from outside of Canada.

We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Minister of Health to work with the industry to embrace modern labelling and adjust Health Canada's proposed cost recovery rates to accurately reflect the size and scope of the industry; and that new regulatory changes should only be implemented once the Self-Care Framework is adjusted and backlogs are cleared, operations run efficiently, and there are policies and procedures in place to ensure the stable operations continue.

Help us keep acupuncture safe!

I, like so many of my colleagues, patients and friends have been devastated by the sudden news of the Ontario government to de-regulate our profession to where we will no longer be considered Regulated Health Professionals.

This means so many potential harmful things if we don’t act quickly. Some of which include:

- The possible loss of your insurance coverage to receive acupuncture from a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) trained professional
- No review or regulation of education or clinical hour requirements meaning basically ANYONE can do Acupuncture or administer herbs. I can’t express enough how dangerous this is
- No overview of malpractice (e.g. if someone experiences sexual assault, there will no longer be a regulatory College to report to)

The Ministry of Labour says this is about increasing access for TCM practitioners, many of whom are immigrants, and may face language barriers and other issues. We understand this, we want this too! Actually, many of us wanted this at the beginning of regulation almost 10 years ago and are NOT opposed to this. BC was able to remove this language barrier in their examination/application process - so can we! 

We want an inclusive, safe, regulated profession. We want to offer Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine to our patients safely and effectively. We want our profession to move forward, not backwards.

We have a few ways you can help us:

-We have drafted a letter, specifically from the perspective of patients, that could help stop The Traditional Chinese Medicine Repeal Act, 2022 of Bill 88, Working for Workers Act, 2022, Schedule 5. Please send it to your MPPs!

Spring, the Awakening of Nature

Spring in Traditional Chinese Medicine is characterized by the rise of Yang energy. The sun warms the earth and nature awakens. It is the start of a new cycle. A similar process takes place in ourselves. New plans are set in motion and our body is waking up.
