We want to express our deepest gratitude to Scott Smith, Emily Whitely, their parents, and the entire Smith Funeral Home and Family Centre organization for their unwavering support of our Coldest Night of the Year event. Their involvement has been a cornerstone of our success, and we couldn’t have hosted such a wonderful event without their hard work and dedication. Today, we presented them with a shadow box frame, containing all the toques from the 5 years that we have been hosting the event.

We have not just lost a colleague, but a friend – and truly someone who was so much more than that. Losing one of our own leaves a space that can never truly be filled in our team. June was a pillar in our work family, and that space will forever be held for her.

For 34 years June has been a part of our team. Oddly enough Don and June graduated Humber together, at a time when the funeral profession was a very male dominated field, and June was a trailblazer who made her mark. Although she did not start her career with us, once she joined the team, she was a steadfast presence everyone knew to expect and loved. She was an exceptional funeral director with a memory like no other. Her care for families, attention to detail, knowledge, experience and calming presence are a mere start to what made her who she was. Families loved her, our staff loved her, and everyone who met her felt her care.

June had a long and profound professional career. As a funeral director she was always a comforting and supportive guide to any family she saw. But to us, she was the first one to the office (sometimes a competition with Don in the early years), she was a mentor and preceptor to many – teaching with quiet wisdom (so much wisdom) and patience. She was the person we all strived to be like, as she worked circles around everyone. Everyone wanted to work with her, her files were always complete, she could answer any question and with her around you knew everything would be okay.

We have all learned something from June, and we each have cherished memories we will hold on tight to. June was a role model. She was quiet, yet her presence was always felt. She was an anchor to us all. Her warmth and wisdom brought comfort in moments when it was needed most. She was cherished beyond words and will always be remembered.

Her legacy lives on in every life she touched.
