Sensors and Analytics for Monitoring Mobility and Memory - SAM3

Sensors and Analytics for Monitoring Mobility and Memory - SAM3 Sensors and Analytics for Monitoring Mobility and Memory (SAM3): solutions to enable an aging population to maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle.

SAM3 is a collaboration between the Bruyère Research Institute and Carleton University in partnership with the AGE-WELL National Centre of Excellence. SAM3 stands for Sensors and Analytics for Monitoring Mobility and Memory. Our focus is research and innovation projects on the application of technology based solutions to enable an aging population to maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle. These solutions are co-created with industry, clinical, academic, and older adults and their families. Through SAM3, regional capacity for industry/clinical/academic/user collaborations will be built. It will assist in understanding the benefits of solutions through trials with real users in clinical and home settings.

**"We all have someone we love—a parent, a grandparent, an aunt or uncle—who wants to stay in their home, living independently for as long as possible. But as they age, safety, mobility, and daily tasks become more challenging.
What if technology could bridge that gap?
From smart home solutions to AI-powered health monitoring, innovation is transforming how we support aging at home.
How do you see technology shaping the future of aging in place?"**

We invite you to join us for an engaging webinar hosted by MOPC Network and MindfulTech Institute, exploring key aging personas and the evolving needs of older adults.

When discussing aging, we often begin with the concept of Aging Well — recognizing that not all older adults face immediate health challenges. From this foundation, we will explore:

- Aging Well – Independent older adults with no specific health concerns.
- Early Mobility Challenges – Those beginning to experience mobility limitations but maintaining full independence.
- Early Cognitive Challenges – Individuals facing the first signs of cognitive change while remaining independent.

For each persona, we will discuss real-world solutions available today to support their well-being. We will also touch on how these needs may evolve over time, leading to more dependence on caregivers and healthcare services—setting the stage for a deeper discussion at our upcoming April event.

"Join us in shaping a future where aging at home is safer, easier, and more dignified."

Congrats to the capstone team and their great work with Connected Canadians.

🌟Congratulations to Ana, Subear, Jacob, and Farhan! These 4th-year Systems and Computer Engineering Students worked with Connected Canadians this past year on their capstone project, “How Can Amazon Alexa Assist with a Clinician’s Assessment?”. The project was supervised by Dr. Bruce Wallace and Dr. Frank Knoefel at Carleton’s School of Systems and Computer Engineering.

At CC, we thrive on exciting collaborations like this one, where every moment is a chance to learn and grow together. 🌱 Let's keep learning together and making a difference! 💫

The Sensors and Analytics for Monitoring Mobility and Memory - SAM3 book on Supportive Smart Homes has been announced by the publisher for pre-order. Very exciting!

About this book
Significant health-industry human resource needs increase the reliance on family and friends to support older adults hoping to age in place. This book explores how recent improvements in integrated home technologies have the potential to address those challenges. The book considers how embedded home sensors can be used to monitor the health and wellbeing of older adults and how that can be used to assist with supporting safety and well-being. The content is designed to help multiple stakeholders in the supportive smart home space to better understand the complexity of this field and the need for transdisciplinary collaboration. These stakeholders include the older adults who will benefit from supportive smart home technology; informal and formal caregiver and healthcare professionals concerned about the older adult’s well-being; researchers from multiple disciplines in the supportive smart home area and their funders; companies looking to develop solutions and services or expand their offerings; policy makers who want to ensure privacy and equity in access and a successful integration of these technologies into the evolving health and social services sectors; and students, the future leaders in AgeTech. Overall, the intent of the book is to inspire engineers, computer scientists, industrial designers, clinicians and healthcare providers, social scientists, students, policy makers, and older adults and their caregivers to collaborate in advancing the supportive smart home space to develop more options for aging in place.

This book explores current and future potential for smart home technologies to create environments that support the well-being and health of older adults
