JMS owner and trainer, Jan Southam is an experienced first aid trainer with a background of working within the Ambulance service, Over the last 15 years Jan has delivered courses to a wide variety of clients including Doctors and Dental surgeries, Schools, Nurseries and many Blue chip companies. Jan, in her spare time, works as an FREC 4 event medic and Community First Responder for East Midlands

Ambulance service. Business Partner, Sarah O'Neill ,as well as being an experienced first aid trainer, specialises in Mental Health courses, Healthcare Professional courses and Understanding Neurodiversity. She will also be working to expand the business into further territories including Wellingborough, Kettering and surrounding areas. Her interest in positive psychology and neuroscience enables her to embed the latest research into her classes ensuring a full and relevant learning experience for her delegates. She is a bundle of energy who can deliver fully immersive training ensuring her learners leave with a smile on their face.

There was a powerful moment where crews responded to a patient who had suffered a seizure deep in woodland 🌲 and they used the what3words app to pinpoint the exact location.

Knowing the difference between a heart attack and a cardiac arrest could save a life ❤️

A heart attack happens when an artery supplying the heart with blood becomes blocked. The person is usually awake and breathing, but may have chest pain, pain in the arm, neck or jaw, shortness of breath or feel unwell 🚑

A cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly stops beating properly and the person becomes unconscious and is not breathing normally ⚠️

A heart attack can sometimes lead to a cardiac arrest, but they are not the same thing.

If someone is having a heart attack, call 999 immediately 📞

If someone is in cardiac arrest, call 999, start CPR and use a defibrillator if one is available 🫀

🚨 MYTH BUSTER 🚨

You may have seen posts online claiming that coughing repeatedly during a heart attack can save your life.

❌ This is a myth.

The Resuscitation Council UK warns that “cough CPR” is incorrect advice and could actually make the situation worse.

A heart attack and a cardiac arrest are not the same thing. Most people having a heart attack are still conscious and need urgent medical help, not repeated coughing.

If you think you or someone else is having a heart attack:

• Call 999 immediately
• Ask for an ambulance
• Follow the advice from the call handler
• Stay calm and rest while waiting for help

Don’t rely on social media myths when it comes to saving lives. Learn the facts and know what to do in a real emergency.

Thanks to Active Family Chiropractic Clinic for having Jan from JMS First Aid Training on site yesterday to deliver their EFAW (Emergency First Aid at Work) course.

Training was carried out in their own workplace setting, giving the team the chance to learn and practise first aid in the environment they work in every day. This helps staff feel more confident in how to respond to incidents, treat patients safely, and make the best use of the equipment available to them on site.

On-site training is a great way to make first aid practical, relevant, and tailored to the needs of each workplace.

Well done to everyone who took part a fantastic group to teach!
