JMS First Aid Training offers workplace first aid, fire, and health & safety training in Northampton

JMS owner and trainer, Jan Southam is an experienced first aid trainer with a background of working within the Ambulance service, Over the last 15 years Jan has delivered courses to a wide variety of clients including Doctors and Dental surgeries, Schools, Nurseries and many Blue chip companies. Jan, in her spare time, works as an FREC 4 event medic and Community First Responder for East Midlands Ambulance service. Business Partner, Sarah O'Neill ,as well as being an experienced first aid trainer, specialises in Mental Health courses, Healthcare Professional courses and Understanding Neurodiversity. She will also be working to expand the business into further territories including Wellingborough, Kettering and surrounding areas. Her interest in positive psychology and neuroscience enables her to embed the latest research into her classes ensuring a full and relevant learning experience for her delegates. She is a bundle of energy who can deliver fully immersive training ensuring her learners leave with a smile on their face.

I’m resharing this important post from Sepsis UK because knowing the signs of sepsis can save a life. Sepsis can strike anyone, at any age, and it progresses fast early recognition truly makes all the difference.

⚠️ Remember the key signs of sepsis (SEPSIS):
• Slurred speech or confusion
• Extreme shivering or muscle pain
• Passing no urine in a day
• Severe breathlessness
• It feels like you’re going to die
• Skin mottled, discoloured, or very pale

If you ever suspect sepsis, seek medical help immediately. Trust your instincts.

🚼 Does your nursery comply with the 2025 Ofsted / EYFS Statutory Framework? 🚼

At JMS First Aid, we offer a blended Paediatric First Aid (PFA) course that meets all the requirements of the 2025 Ofsted / Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, ensuring your staff are both confident and competent to respond appropriately in an emergency.

Here’s what you need to know:
✅ The updated EYFS framework states that at least one person with a current full Paediatric First Aid certificate must be on-site at all times when children are present and must accompany them on outings.
✅ From 1 September 2025, students, trainees, and apprentices must hold a full PFA certificate to be counted in ratio.
✅ The full PFA course must meet Annex A criteria of the EYFS framework and be renewed every three years.

With a solid background in the medical field and over a decade of experience delivering first aid training, Jan has been helping people build the skills and confidence to respond in emergencies since 2013.

Her frontline experience in the ambulance service brings a practical, real-world perspective to every course, ensuring that what you learn goes far beyond the textbook.

🎆 Bonfire Night Safety Reminder from JMS First Aid 🎆

Every year, thousands of people across the UK suffer burns from fireworks, sparklers, and bonfires — many of which could be prevented or treated more effectively with quick first aid knowledge.

Here’s what to do if someone gets a burn this Bonfire Night 👇

🚫 Don’t use ice, butter, or creams – they can make it worse.
💧 Cool the burn immediately under cool running water for at least 20 minutes.
💍 Remove jewellery or tight clothing near the burn before it swells.
🩹 Cover it loosely with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy cloth.
📞 Seek medical help if the burn is large, deep, or on the face, hands, feet, or ge****ls.

✨ Sparklers burn at over 1,000°C – that’s hotter than a blowtorch! Always supervise children and dispose of used sparklers safely in water.
