Taking care whilst running:
Today I had a really bad fall whilst out trail running. I tripped on a rocky descent and landed like few metres down the track unable to get up for a few mins for the searing pain in my right knee. On inspection there were multiple open areas on knee, arm and hands. Now, 10 hours later, the knee is very swollen and shows signs of some internal damage. The next few days will be telling. Thankfully my twice operated ligament deficient left knee was unscathed, largely due to the way I fell (heavily on my right side), and the fact that I always run with that knee in a really good support by Genu Medi.
Luckily I was with a friend, but my phone was out of battery, I had no first aid stuff in the car, and had to drive half an hour home before I could bathe the wounds and assess the damage!
So really this is just a quick reminder to:
Always tell someone where you are going and how long you expect to be.
Make sure your mobile phone is charged up and on your person, not in the car!
And that you have some rudimentary first aid bits in the car to at least clean any areas of broken skin and apply some compression and a dressing. The cosmopore dressings are great and come in a variety of sizes. Available on line. Thankfully I had some large enough in our old mountain biking first aid stuff at home from years ago, slightly out of date but nevertheless large enough to cover 2/3rds of the main open areas on right leg and arm to enable me to get some sleep tonight!
Stay safe folks!
