Chilblains! I’m seeing lots of these recently 😣
Chilblains are small, itchy, swollen areas of skin that develop after exposure to cold and damp conditions. They usually affect the fingers, toes, ears, nose, and heels. They are common in the UK during autumn and winter.
Who is more likely to get chilblains?
• People with poor circulation
• Smokers
• Those who are underweight
• Older adults and children
• People with conditions such as Raynaud’s phenomenon
• Anyone frequently exposed to cold, damp conditions
Self-care and prevention
✔ Keep your whole body warm, especially hands and feet
✔ Wear warm socks, gloves, and layered clothing
✔ Keep skin dry – change damp socks or shoes promptly
✔ Warm up gradually (avoid sudden heat like hot water bottles directly on skin)
✔ Exercise regularly to improve circulation
✔ Eat regular, balanced meals
✔ Stop smoking (smoking worsens circulation)
🚫 Do not scratch – this can break the skin and cause infection
🚫 Avoid direct heat (fires, radiators) on cold skin
