BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a simple calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate whether your weight is in a healthy range 📊

Knowing your BMI can help identify if you may be underweight, overweight or at risk of health conditions linked to weight, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.

While BMI is a useful starting point, it does not tell the whole story 👇
Waist measurement is also important, as carrying extra weight around your middle can increase your risk of health problems, even if your BMI falls within a healthy range.

Understanding both measurements can help you make informed choices about your health and seek support if needed 💙✨

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, and recognising symptoms early can make a real difference.

Symptoms may include difficulty p*eing, a weak flow, needing to p*e more often (especially at night), discomfort in the pelvic area or blood in urine/semen. If you notice changes, talk to your GP and tell them about any family history of cancer - not just immediate family, as broader history can help guide decisions about checks and referral.

Public figures like Sir Chris Hoy have also shared their cancer journeys to help raise awareness and encourage conversations about men’s health. 💙🩺✨

From September 2025, the NHS Cervical Screening Programme began rolling out digital delivery of negative test results through the NHS App — and by now, this process is fully in place.

📲 Here’s how it works:
- If your result is negative, you’ll receive it directly in the NHS App, along with a notification on your device.
- If the message isn’t opened within 72 hours, a backup letter will automatically be sent.
- If your app notifications are switched off, you may also receive an SMS reminder to check the NHS App.

📬 Important:
Abnormal results will continue to be sent by post for the time being.

💻📲 With most screening invitations and reminders now sent digitally, this move to digital results is helping make cervical screening quicker and more convenient.

👉 Don’t have the NHS App yet? Download it here: www.nhs.uk/nhs-app/

🔔 Once downloaded, turn on notifications so you never miss an update!

Meningitis Vaccines Information:

Babies born on or after 1st July 2015 will have received the Meningitis B vaccinations at age 8 and 12 weeks and a booster at 12-13 months of age as part of the routine childhood vaccination programme (as long as they were brought to all their childhood vaccination appointments). Please check your red books to see this documented. The vaccination is called Bexsero.

Babies born from 1st May to 30th June 2015 were eligible for the vaccine during their remaining appointments starting 1st September 2015.

Children will receive Meningitis ACWY vaccination at high school aged 13-14 years old. If you think your child has missed this vaccination please contact the surgery as we can give this up to age 25 years.

There is currently no recommendation to vaccinate older children for Meningitis B unless they are told to have the vaccination due to other medical conditions causing immunosuppression.

If you need to check your child vaccination history, we will endeavour to do this as soon as possible and get back to you in a timely manner. We may need to speak to children over 11 years old when we speak to a parent for consent reasons.

Salt plays an important role in the body, but too much can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Many processed foods contain hidden salt, so it’s easy to consume more than recommended. On the other hand, very low salt levels can sometimes contribute to symptoms like muscle cramps, weakness or fluid balance issues, especially if combined with dehydration.

Staying well hydrated, keeping active and aiming for a balanced diet can help support healthy blood pressure. Understanding how salt affects your body can help you make informed choices. 🧂💧🩺✨

💬 Know the signs. Speak up. Be heard.

In healthcare, your concerns matter.

In GP practices, Jess’s Rule encourages clinicians to reflect and review if a patient returns multiple times with the same issue.

In hospitals, Martha’s Rule gives patients, families and carers the right to ask for an urgent review if they feel something isn’t right.

👀 If you’re worried about a loved one in hospital:
- Speak to the ward team
- If concerns remain, you can request a further clinical review

Your voice is important — and it could make a difference.

Symptoms such as ongoing tiredness, swelling, changes in urination or persistent kidney pain should never be ignored. Lifestyle choices, hydration and underlying health conditions all play a role in kidney health.

There is also growing concern about ketamine use in young people, as it can cause serious damage to the bladder and kidneys, sometimes leading to long-term complications. Knowing the risks and acting early can help protect kidney function and overall wellbeing. 🩺💧💙✨
