White noise - why we love it! ✨

💤 When little one’s wake up from their natural sleep cycles, they can quickly become alert to the presence - or lack of - external noises. They will then want to get up, and that will quite often happen.

The benefit of playing a monotonous sound such as White, Pink or Brown noise is that it is reminiscent of their time in the womb. Playing white noise at nap times and bed time is a quick way to signal to baby that it’s time to sleep, and allows for a calming transition from one sleep cycle to the next.

🔊 White noise is best when played on a dedicated white noise machine, and should be played continuously through the night. The machine should be kept at least a metre away from your little one’s crib, cot or bed, and should be played at around 60 decibels.

😴 Personally, I use the Dreamegg D2 white noise machine with Ruben and have since he was discharged from NICU at 5 days old. They also have a lovely little portable version for those on-the-go snoozes! Available on Amazon, but there are lots of white noise machines on there! Have a look at what works best for you.

Do you know what happens during your babies Sleep cycles? 💤

So much changes for your little one in those first few months! From 3 to 4 months old, your baby’s circadian rhythms will have developed, and their sleep cycles will begin to mature!

We all cycle in and out of light and deep sleep - also known as REM and Non-REM sleep. As baba falls asleep, they are entering into light sleep, which gradually becomes deeper and more restorative rest. After approximately 30 minutes, they leave their deep sleep and will go into the REM phase of their cycle. Lastly, they will then experience what is known as partial arousal. At this point, babies will either transition into the next sleep cycle or awaken fully.

Have you ever wondered why your baby cat naps, or wakes up after 45/50 minutes? Now you know why! 🥱

Little ones who haven’t learnt to self soothe yet, or who trouble connecting their sleep cycles will wake up and look for their sleep associations - for example, being fed, rocked, lulled or patted - to get back to sleep.

If you need help teaching your baby to self-settle, give me a message for some free advice!

Why is darkness essential for sleep? 💤

Darkness is super important for us, and our babies to get a restful nights sleep!

Our bodies circadian rhythms are aligned with the 24 hour light-dark environment. In response to darkness, our pineal glands will secrete melatonin - AKA, The Sleepy Hormone!

Exposing the body to bright light, and blue lights in the evening can shift the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, and lead to a delayed response in the production of our sleepy hormones making bed-time much more difficult!

Using blackout blinds, restricting the use of blue-light producing devices at least an hour before bed and removing night lights (or switching to a red/orange one if you absolutely can’t remove) can be easy ways to aid a night of restorative sleep. 🌙

💤 Did you know that your baby can only tolerate so much awake time?

If I could give just one piece of advice when it comes to improving your little one’s sleep - and keeping their sleep on track - it would be to follow their age appropriate awake windows.

An awake window is the amount of time your baby is awake between naps and before bed. (This includes feeding time and the time it takes your little one to fall asleep.) As your little one grows, so does the amount of time that they can happily stay awake for!

If you find that your baby is taking short naps, fighting sleep, resisting bedtime, waking frequently overnight or starting their day at the crack of dawn the first thing I would recommend checking is their awake windows. (This was Little Roo before I started my training 👀)

Remember, every baby is different, so their awake windows will be slightly different too! These windows are averages, but can be a great guide in preventing overtiredness.

Save this for later, tag a parent this could help, or pop me a message if you have any questions! 🌙✨

Sleep Tip: You produce the sleepy hormone (melatonin) when it’s dark.

So, spending as much of your Little One’s awake time as possible in the daylight and putting them down to sleep in a very dark room (for naps as well as nighttime sleep), you will help their bodies to regulate their circadian rhythm.

Did you know that Rooted Sleep is named for my own little sleep thieves? Ruben Arthur (Roo)& his big sister Thea Emelye (Ted). ❤️

My little Ted made me a mummy, but she also lulled me into a false sense of security by sleeping through from 12 weeks old! 5 years later, along came my miracle Roo… and oh boy 👀😂

I thought the best way to start would be with an Introduction!

Hi! Welcome to Rooted Sleep! I am Holly, mummy to Thea and Ruben, and Partner to Michael.

My passion for working with Babies and Children comes from my background in Newborn and Baby photography. There, I discovered my love for helping new parents with the little tips and tricks I picked up for helping their bundles of joy drift off during sessions. What better way to spend my own maternity leave then to retrain in a field I am truly fascinated in!

I’m currently enrolled on The Psychology of Child Sleep Therapy course with the incredible .

Follow my journey as I study to become a Full Time IICT & CHP accredited Sleep Therapist.
