Another reminder to everyone off on their Easter travels 🧳 🐣

If you’ve got back pain, and a long journey ahead, try sitting on a neck pillow, or a wedge cushion, to help.

The +ve angle will allow gravity/pressure to come off the lower spine. A -ve angle will almost certainly load your lower spine for the duration of the journey. Increasing risk for your disc.

Enjoy your hols!

💺 Don't let a few hours in a cramped cabin ruin your time off..

There is a lot of travel on the horizon ☀️ - with Easter, bank holidays and the summer coming up! 🛫🏖️

You might be able to use your neck pillow, to help. (If you have one handy)

The "Seat-Pillow" idea: 🧠
Instead of putting that travel pillow around your neck, try sitting on it! By placing it under your "sitting-bones," you create a slight forward tilt in your pelvis. This opens up the space between your lower spinal discs and stops the "Deep-Seat Slump" that causes so much travel pain.

Less spinal pressure: ☁️
Also there’s no pressure on your tailbone - If you put the middle cut out where the pillow finishes.

✅ 3 Tips for a Pain-Free Landing:
• Sit on the Hack: Use the pillow to maintain your spine's natural "S" curve rather than a compressed "C" shape.
✅• The Aisle Walk: Every 30 or 60 minutes, get up! Walking just a few laps up/down the aisle and back "re-boots" the circulation to your body. (Also stops the blood pooling in your Deep Veins)
✅ • Try pushing your feet into the floor and push both your fists down into the seat 💺 to temporarily lift your bum off.

Whether you're flying away for Easter or planning a road trip for the Spring Bank Holiday in late May, keep your "fuses" reset and your back, in action!

Safe travels!

🧸 ⚡️ Did half-term leave your back feeling older than it is?

What to do?

✅ "Hip Hinge": Stop rounding your back to pick up your kids or their toys. Bend at the hips and knees, keeping your chest up.

✅ Heat Relief: if you’re stiff after sitting on cold benches in the park, a 15-minute wheat bag session can help.

✅ Movement : Spend 1 minute on the floor gently rocking your knees from side to side.

✅ Hydrate: You’ve likely survived on coffee and stress all week. Drink 2 extra glasses of water today keep water flowing to your discs.

❌ Avoid "Powering Through": If your back is screaming, it’s a warning light. 🚨

❌ Stop rounding your back to pick up your kids or their toys.

❌ Stop holding your breath when exerting, breathe out instead.

🐣 Don't ignore it until the Easter holidays! 🌷 Springtime, is coming, so get yourself checked out and treated, so you can be Back In Action ✨ by the time the weathers better.

When you’re feeling sad, remember this C6 vertebrae (6th bone in your neck) and how happy it is to support you every day! 😃

🛠️To keep your neck happy:

✅ Hold your phone up at eye level today, rather than looking down!

✅ Gently roll your shoulders backwards. Feels better already, doesn't it?

✅ Physically lifting your chin and looking up slightly (instead of at the floor) can actually signal your brain to feel a bit brighter!

❄️⚡️ Woke up unable to turn your head? You aren't alone this month.

🛠️ What to do?

✅ Heat Pack

✅ Eyes hack - Without moving your neck, look as far to the left as possible with just your eyes, hold for 3 seconds, then look as far to the right. Repeat 10 times

✅ Neck movement - Place your palm against the side of your head. Gently push your head into your hand (use only 10% of your strength) for 5 seconds, then relax. Repeat on the other side.

❌ Avoid sleeping on your stomach.

✅ wear a scarf 🧣

WHY DID IT HAPPEN
If you woke up this morning with your neck locked painfully to one side (a Wry Neck), don’t panic—and don't try to force it to "crack."

It’s called a Torticollis aka Wry Neck.
We’ve seen a huge spike in these cases over the last 4 weeks.

Why? You can blame the Preston weather. 🥶
Even if the thermometer reads 4°C, that wind chill across Penwortham or down by the Ribble makes it feel sub-zero.

When that icy wind hits the exposed skin of the neck (between the scarf and the hairline), the body’s immediate, subconscious reflex is to hunch the shoulders up toward the ears.
Whether you’re waiting at the bus stop, walking the dog or de-icing the car.

You take that tension home, go to sleep, and the muscles never fully relax.

The brain 🧠(the electrician) senses this area is vulnerable. When you make a small move in your sleep, the brain decides the neck is under threat and "trips the main circuit breaker"—throwing everything into a protective spasm to stop movement. Waking up locked.

☎️ Stuck and can't get the "fuse" to reset? Give the clinic a call.
We’re here to help you get back in action gently. ⚡️

📰 The good news, Spring is round the corner and so is a bit of warmer weather (hopefully)
🌷

In clinic, we often see clients who have aggravated an old injury or caused a new one just by doing "small" jobs around the house—especially moving furniture! 🤕 🦴

Strains, sprains, disc issues and even fractures, can happen in a split second when we lift something awkwardly.

We spotted this brilliant scheme from South Ribble Borough Council and had to share it.
📜 If you’re over 60, or over 18 with a long-term health condition affecting your mobility, you can access a trustworthy handyperson for those home repairs. 🛠️

Whether it's for you, or you’re worried about an elderly parent in the Preston area trying to tackle DIY themselves, this is a fantastic resource.
Whilst we always encourage staying active and independent, sometimes it’s better to move smarter, not harder. Stay safe and outsource the heavy lifting!

Already feeling the strain? If you’ve already "overdone it" and need a hand getting back on your feet, our team of Chiropractors, Physios, and Massage therapists are here to help.

Just call us on 01772 749389 ☎️

Do you need a trustworthy handyperson? We can help! 🛠

Care and Repair are a charitable organisation which aims to improve people’s homes.

This is for people over the age of 60 or over 18 with a long term health condition that affects your mobility.

If you are struggling with some minor jobs such as a leaking tap, putting a picture up or moving some furniture, please get in touch, we can help!

There is support available across a number of the South Ribble hubs. We may be able to offer a subsidised rate to help with the cost of a fully trusted handy person. When contacting the scheme quote your local area for more information.
