World Breastfeeding Week 2020 Statement: COVID-19 exposes fragility of infant feeding support in the UK.

This World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August 2020) we are calling on the to address the fragility of breastfeeding support services.⠀

Our organisations have seen first-hand how the COVID-19 crisis has exposed the fragility of infant feeding support available for families.⠀

Over the past few months, the need to support families has escalated, and support services have been stretched beyond anything in our experience.⠀

We were proud to sign our name to this joint statement.⠀

Advocacy for the breastfed infant is what we do here at Nursing Matters.

Do get in touch if you have any questions about how we might be able to advocate for your child.

The IBCLC can advocate for breastfeeding babies and their families, and whole communities. Their role is integral to the function of the healthcare team.

Examples of advocacy might include the role that LCGB plays as a national organisation in representation on the All Party Parliamentary Group for Infant Feeding & Inequalities (APPGIFI), and the Baby Feeding Law Group (BFLG), as well as roles that individual IBCLCs may have in advocacy for a particular infant or a specific service more locally.

What other examples can you think of? Has an IBCLC advocated for you, your family or something in your area?

Fifteen national infant feeding organisations including Nursing Matters, have today issued a joint statement calling on the new government to invest in the health of women and children by supporting and protecting breastfeeding.

Although political manifestos have already been written, this statement will be sent to all major party headquarters as a demonstration of best practice for whichever party comes to power.

You could also use it as a basis for discussion with your local candidates, to explore their thoughts on the issues raised - including consistent breastfeeding support and protected breaks for breastfeeding mothers.

Contact, comfort, connection and security are vitally important to your baby. Not in 'limited' amounts, but unlimited. Be wary of advice that should try and limit these important and most basic of human needs. 🤱👣
Babies thrive on being safe, soothed, supported and connected.
