In years gone by, families would wear black clothing as a sign of respect following the death of a loved one. Traditionally these would be worn for some months.

Another reason for the wearing of this attire, was so that the wider community could identify who was mourning or 'in grief'. People would be able to easily identify those who were recently bereft and in turn be able to moderate their behaviour and understanding towards them.

In todays society, we may be given a few days compassionate leave and have expectations of ourselves to return to 'normal' after a week or two. In the fast-paced world of today, are we maybe expecting too much of ourselves too soon?

For many, their 'normal' may never be the same again. Should we embrace and support those around us, not just in the early stages of grief, but later when the rest of the world has 'moved on'? And also be kinder to ourselves, allowing ourselves more time to mourn?
