I just had to do it!!

Well, I asked one of my teenage sons to do it for me 😬

The prompts were mum, teacher, researcher, psychology, the lakes, passionate about the Headssup message of emotional intelligence for children, Emi our mascot, fuelled by coffee and a love for our dog teddy.

Two versions - can’t choose so posting both šŸ’œšŸ˜

I think we nailed it šŸ˜šŸ©·

ā€œIn my Liverpool homeā€ā€¦ šŸŽµ

If you’re as old as me you’ll know the rest of the words to this song šŸ˜

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon with my Dad - in the City we are lucky enough to call home.

We were both a bit thoughtful as we were trying to push through a painful anniversary weekend of losing mum (and dad’s soul mate of 56 years, his wife Cathy) And what would have been their 56th wedding anniversary.

This post is a nod to both my mum and dad - two people who really did/do all they can to help children/teens and adults feel like they belong, are safe and connected (this years children’s mental health awareness weeks theme), through their life’s work and with their own family.

Dads an author, he writes about Liverpool’s past - it’s buildings, people, traditions, history, with spooky clarity (his memory is phenomenal), with all funds raised from his book sales always going to Zoe’s Place and ā€˜Kind’ in Liverpool - and Rebecca House on the Isle of Man - organisations who do all they can to help children feel like they belong.

And mums community hairdressers ā€˜Cathy’s of Garston’ is still going, 56 years after she opened it and still helping people feel like they belong, are safe and connected.

So thank you Mum and Dad - for all your hard work, determination through adversity and for that sense of belonging, safety and connection you gave and still give to me and my sisters and others.

I try to do my bit to help children feel like they belong, are safe and connected too with the help of Emi Ofcourse.

It isn’t always easy to navigate and get the right message over to the right people at the right time, but the cause is too important to turn my back on. So I keep going. Much like my mum and dad have done all those years.

Headssup and Emi - just another way to help children feel that sense of belonging, feel safe and connected - because when that is in place, magical things can happen šŸ©·šŸ§”šŸ’œšŸ’ššŸ©µšŸ’™ā¤ļøšŸ’Ÿ

šŸ’› As Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 (9–15 Feb) approaches, this year’s theme ā€œThis Is My Placeā€ reminds us how vital it is for children to feel they belong, feel safe, included and truly valued.

Last week, Aughton St Michaels CE Primary School kicked off their Year 6 transition journey with a Headssup Wellbeing Reset workshop — helping pupils understand their emotions, friendships and wellbeing before moving on to secondary school.

By working with both primary and secondary schools, I help create a smoother, more confident transition for pupils, so they feel supported, connected and ready for their next chapter.

This transition work is backed by research with Lancaster University, and we’ve just finalised our latest survey report — which will be shared with local trust senior leaders in the coming weeks.

I’m proud to have worked with local schools for three consecutive years, and with four Lancashire secondary schools again in 2026.

This was terrifying and exciting in equal measure…

Thank you to all who attended this week's Collaboration Cafe where we heard from Jane Booth, founder of Headssup CIC, and Dr Jude Lunn, from Lancaster University’s Division of Health Research, who shared details of their burgeoning research and evaluation partnership.

Jane has drawn on her experience as a teacher and parent to develop evidence-based and relational activities to support children and young people's emotional, social, physical and friendship health. She shared powerful testimonials of benefits to the emotional health of children engaging with the Headssup programme, not least through the universally-loved Emi (Emotional Intelligence) beanie mascot.

Headssup will continue to refine its practice through further collaborative evaluation and research, working with Jude and other Lancaster researchers to improve young people's wellbeing in educational settings.

Welcome to Headssup.

Headssup (two s’s for a reason!) is wellbeing training for early years, children and adults. The training is centre around psychological research and is delivered in various ways including an animated 3 minute video, a story book and non slip stepping stones game and via online cpd training. The aim is to increase emotional intelligence (EI) in age appropriate ways, putting you more in control of your mental health.

What is EI? EI is defined as the ability to be aware of, control and express your emotions.

EI can help to:

* Demystify why we feel the way we feel * Increase personal well-being
