A Look Back at a High-Pressure Moment in Football Medicine ⚽️🩺

Throwing it back to a real high-intensity moment from a while ago…

During this match, Lia Wälti went down after a challenge from Aggie Beaver-Jones, who was sent off for what was judged a reckless tackle. In the aftermath, I worked alongside the Arsenal medical team to help safely extricate Lia from the pitch, as there was a concern at the time for a potential tib/fib fracture.

Even though this was quite some time ago, it’s a moment that’s stuck with me — the kind of situation where staying calm, communicating clearly, and working seamlessly as a team makes all the difference.

Huge respect to the Arsenal medical staff for how professionally they handled the incident, and full credit to Lia for how she managed a very tough moment.

These experiences shape you. They sharpen your skills. And they remind you why we do what we do.

🌀 Quick Back Release You Can Do Anywhere

If your back feels stiff or tight, this simple mobility drill is a great way to open things up — and it takes less than 30 seconds.

In the video, you’ll see me in a prone press-up position, then moving into a thread-the-arm twist to release tension through the mid–lower back.

How to Do It:

1️⃣ Start lying on your stomach.
2️⃣ Press up onto your hands to open the front of your body.
3️⃣ Sweep one arm underneath your chest.
4️⃣ Allow your body to twist gently as you reach through.
5️⃣ Hold for a moment, feel the stretch, then switch sides.

What It Helps With:

✨ Relieves mid-back and lower-back stiffness
✨ Improves thoracic rotation
✨ Reduces tension after sitting or lifting
✨ A great warm-up before training or a quick reset during the day

Simple, effective, and easy to add to your routine.

If your back feels tight regularly, we can help identify what’s causing it — not just treat the symptoms. DM us to book in at SS Therapy Injury Clinic.

💥 What Is Power — and Why Do You Need It? 💥

When we talk about training, most people focus on strength… but power is the real game-changer in both sport and the gym.

⚡ What Is Power?

Power = Strength × Speed
It’s your ability to produce force quickly.
Not just how much you can lift — but how fast you can apply that force.

Think of it as the difference between:
🏋️ Slowly pushing a heavy sled (strength)
vs.
💥 Explosively sprinting off the line (power)

🔥 Why Power Matters in Sport

Power is behind almost every athletic movement:
⚽ Breaking into a sprint
🏉 Changing direction
🥊 Punching and striking
🏀 Jumping for a rebound
🎾 Accelerating into a shot

Athletes with greater power react faster, move quicker, and hit harder.
It’s the difference between being strong and being dangerous.

🏋️‍♂️ Why Power Matters in the Gym

Even if you’re not a competitive athlete, power training helps you:
✔ Build more athletic muscle
✔ Improve coordination and movement quality
✔ Increase fast-twitch fibre recruitment
✔ Burn more calories (higher intensity = higher demand)
✔ Reduce injury risk by improving how you react and stabilise

Power is essential for real-world function too:
climbing stairs, catching yourself if you slip, lifting objects quickly — it all involves power.

💪 How To Train Power

You don’t need to be an elite athlete to work on power. Examples include:
🏋️ Olympic-style lifts (scaled to your level)
🔁 Plyometrics (jumps, hops, bounds)
🦵 Medicine ball throws
🚀 Speed squats or deadlifts
🏃 Acceleration drills

The key: lighter loads moved FAST, with good control.

If you want help building a power programme safely — whether for sport performance or general strength — we can help you train smarter and move stronger at SS Therapy Injury Clinic.

Shoulder pain is one of the most common problems we treat — but here’s the part most people miss:

Your rotator cuff often isn’t the root cause.

Two major contributors we look for in the clinic are:

1️⃣ Pec Minor Tightness

When the pec minor becomes short and overactive, it:
➡ pulls the shoulder forward
➡ tips the scapula anteriorly
➡ closes down the sub-acromial space
➡ increases compression on the rotator cuff tendons

Result?
Pinching, clicking, weakness, and pain with overhead movement.

2️⃣ Type II Scap Dyskinesis (medial border winging)

This looks like the inner border of the shoulder blade sticking out when you lift or lower your arm.

This pattern reduces upward rotation and forces the rotator cuff to work overtime just to stabilise the joint.

Together, these two issues create the perfect storm for rotator cuff irritation — even if the rotator cuff itself isn’t injured.

🛠 What We Focus On in Rehab

✔ Improve scapular control
✔ Reduce pec minor tightness
✔ Strengthen the posterior cuff
✔ Restore natural overhead mechanics

If your shoulder has been painful for weeks, strengthening alone won’t fix it — the mechanics need correcting.

🏃‍♂️ “Pain on the outside of your knee when running? Read this 👇”

You could be dealing with ITB Syndrome — one of the most common running injuries we see at SS Therapy Injury Clinic.

💥 What it feels like:

Sharp or burning pain on the outer side of your knee

Worsens with running, cycling, or downhill movements

Eases with rest — but keeps coming back 😩

🧠 What’s really happening:
Your iliotibial band (ITB) — a thick band of tissue running from your hip to your knee — becomes tight or irritated from overuse or muscle imbalance.

💪 How we help:
✅ Assess hip, glute and knee mechanics
✅ Release tension through massage and manual therapy
✅ Build a tailored strength & mobility plan to stop it returning

You don’t have to “run through it” — early treatment means faster recovery and less frustration.

📅 Book your assessment with our team today and get back to pain-free running!

💭 “Do sports massages always hurt?” 🤔

Let’s bust this myth once and for all 👇

❌ No — sports massages don’t have to hurt!
The goal isn’t pain… it’s progress.

A well-delivered sports massage should:
✅ Release tension and improve blood flow
✅ Help recovery and flexibility
✅ Target tight or overworked muscles

Discomfort can happen if we’re working through a deep knot or chronic tightness, but it should always feel controlled and within your comfort zone, no more than a 7/10.
You should leave the table feeling looser! 💪

At SS Therapy Injury Clinic, we tailor the pressure and technique to your needs — so whether you prefer a lighter recovery session or a deeper treatment, you’re in control.

📅 Book in today and experience how good a proper sports massage can feel.
