Order of Malta Ambulance Corps-Carlow Unit

Order of Malta Ambulance Corps-Carlow Unit We are a voluntary based ambulance service based in Carlow Town. We rely on our volunteers and the community to keep our unit operational.

We provide a variety of services such as Community Transports, Ambulance Cover and Emergency First Aid. As a voluntary group, the Order of Malta has been active in the Carlow area since 1938. Working closely with the local community, the Carlow Unit has contributed thousands of hours in carrying out the mission of the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps by making a difference in society through providing:

•Community Care
•First Aid & Nursing Service
•Youth Development
•Personal Development

in a Christian, caring and non-discriminatory environment. Today the Unit provides First Aid, Ambulance and Training Services to groups and organisations in the area. Both our vehicles are well equipped (including AEDs) and our members are trained in line with Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council standards, meaning we can offer various levels of cover for any event you may have. Events which the Unit has covered in recent history include:
• Dr Cullen Park - GAA matches
• Gowran Park Racecourse - In conjunction with our colleagues in the Kilkenny Unit
• Charity Fun Runs/Swims
• The Tullow Show
• Carlow Autograss - Stock car racing
• The National Ploughing Championships

We provide a variety of certified and non-certified courses such as basic life support (BLS) and basic first aid, through to PHECC Cardiac First Responder - Community level and Occupational First Aid (OFA). Many of our courses can be tailored to suit particular needs, such as paediatric emergencies or dealing with elderly patients. Email carlow@orderofmalta.ie for more information. All the work we do for the community is founded upon the time and generosity of our volunteers, who give countless hours every year through duties and weekly training to support the unit and make a difference to society. We are always looking for new members and for your time, we will give you the training and competency to provide life-saving skills, as well as developing your leadership and confidence to allow you to remain calm in an emergency. If this interests you, and you are 16 and above email carlow@orderofmalta.ie with the word 'Recruit' in the subject line.

Today, at our Headquarters on Clyde Road, Dublin, Captain Jim Hanley of the Carlow Unit of the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps was awarded with his 60-Year Service Medal signifying a remarkable milestone and testament to a lifetime of service to others.

Jim began his journey in healthcare and with the Ambulance Corps as a young Cadet with Order Of Malta Ireland - Ambulance Corps - Limerick where his passion for helping others first took root. Over the decades, his commitment, compassion, and leadership have inspired many others and made an enduring impact on the communities he has served in. Something which we are proud of.

On behalf of everyone in the Carlow Unit of the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps, we extend our deepest gratitude and warmest congratulations to Jim for his six decades of unwavering dedication, service, and care.

Thank you Jim.

Better late than never!

In August we hosted a dinner dance in the Seven Oaks Hotel to celebrate our 80th Anniversary in which had a great turnout from members, colleagues and guests.

The Celebration was attended by many distinguished guests, including Dr Tony Holohan, former chief medical officer, minister for state with the department of Health, Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, Ken Murnane; and family members of Mr. William Dunny, one of the unit’s founding members.

On the night, many of our members were awarded with their COVID-19 medal in honour of their work during the COVID-19 Pandemic and presented by Dr Tony Holohan.

Members on the evening also received promotions presented by Regional Director Carmel Peacock and Assistant Regional Director Diarmuid Sinnott. We would like to congratulate our members for their hard work and well deserved promotions!

Tony Heffernan - Captain

Many speeches were made on the evening from our guests with Minister Jennifer Murnane saying “this unit has been at the heart of Carlow public safety since 1945” and Cathaoirleach Ken Murnane saying “almost every festival public gathering and sporting event relies on the Order of Malta for on-site support”. These were fantastic to hear as it shows the vital role our volunteers play within their own communities.

On the evening all members attended were presented with a challenge coin that was specifically commissioned for the 80th Anniversary.

We would also like to thank Tammy Walsh for her hard work on making a custom cake for us on the evening. A huge thank you to the Seven Oaks Hotel Carlow for hosting our event and providing a fantastic dinner to enjoy.

We finally would like to thank everyone for attending and are glad that we were able to celebrate this event. The night highlighted the key role our unit plays within our local community and the volunteers that are dedicated to providing their time to help to those who need it most.

Thank you to Paul Curran for the amazing photos!

In honour of our 80th Anniversary this year, we had challenge coins made for our members.

Originating in the military, especially during World War I, they were traditionally used to boost morale and camaraderie. Today, challenge coins are used as symbols of honor, unity, and recognition.

This coin will act as a memory to our members for their work and dedication over their time with our unit.

Many hours of work and design went into this coin from two members within our unit and we are very glad to see the work come to life!
