Basic Cremation – Frequently Asked Questions

When someone dies, not every family wants or needs a formal funeral. A basic cremation can be the right choice for many, and it’s okay to ask questions.

✨Does a basic cremation mean less care?
No. Your loved one is cared for with the same dignity, respect and professionalism as any other service. The difference is simply that there is no formal funeral or gathering.

✨Is there a service or viewing?
A basic cremation does not include a service. It’s a private process, allowing families to grieve quietly or plan a memorial later if they wish; however, a basic cremation can include a viewing if the family desires. Please feel free to discuss any personalisation requests with one of our dedicated team.

✨Can we still have a memorial later on?
Yes. Many families choose to hold a remembrance at a later date, in their own time and in a way that feels right for them and their whānau.

✨Is this option chosen for cultural or personal reasons?
Often, yes. Some families prefer simplicity, privacy, or have loved ones who expressed clear wishes. Others live out of town or want to reduce stress during an already difficult time.

✨Is it okay to choose this even if others might expect a funeral?
Absolutely. There is no right or wrong way to say goodbye. What matters most is choosing what feels right for your family.

✨Will someone talk us through the process?
Our experienced and qualified staff are here to guide our families every step of the way, we are here to walk beside you and guide you through this journey. This is our commitment to you.

At South Taranaki Funeral Services, we’re here to support families with care, clarity and understanding, whatever option they choose.

For some families, a simple cremation without a formal service feels right.

It can allow space to grieve privately, or to plan a memorial at a later time that suits your whānau.

At South Taranaki Funeral Services, a basic cremation still includes the same care, respect and professionalism, just without the formal gathering.

For some farewells, space matters.

For very large services, external venues can be the best option, and we work closely with trusted local venues to ensure everything runs smoothly.

What matters most is that the space fits the farewell, not the other way around.

When having everything in one place helps

For some families, having the service, gathering and farewell all in one location can help make an already emotional time feel a little simpler.

An on-site chapel can be ideal when families are looking for:
• A familiar, calm environment
• Fewer logistics to manage
• One location for family and guests
• Clear planning and coordination

Our on-site chapel here in Hawera is able to comfortably accommodate larger services, while we continue to support families who choose to hold services at churches, halls or other venues.

We’re here to listen, guide, and help make a meaningful service as smooth as possible for you and your whānau.

Choosing the right space for your farewell

For many families, having a chapel on site offers comfort, familiarity, and simplicity.

As a full-service venue, we’re able to host services on site in our chapel, which can seat up to 200 people, making it the largest on-site funeral space in South Taranaki.

For larger gatherings, we also work closely with trusted external venues to ensure every farewell is supported in the space that best suits each family.

Fresh, clean, and ready to welcome our community 👍

Being a full-service venue means there’s always maintenance happening behind the scenes, so we’ve kicked off the year with a deep clean of the carpets across our spaces.
