World Federation Against Drugs, WFAD

World Federation Against Drugs, WFAD WFAD aims for a drug free world. The World Federation Against Drugs (WFAD) is a multilateral community of non-governmental organisations and individuals.

WFAD is democratically organised with an International Board consisting of two representatives from each world region: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Oceania as well as an International President. Founded in 2009, the aim of WFAD is to work for a drug-free world. The members of the WFAD share a common concern that illicit drug use is undercutting traditional values and threatening the existence of stable families, communities, and government institutions throughout the world. The work of the WFAD is built on the principles of universal fellowship and basic human and democratic rights. We believe that working for a drug-free World will promote peace and human development and dignity, democracy, tolerance, equality, freedom and justice. WFAD aims to strengthen prevention, increase access to treatment, and promote recovery!

On day 4 of the , we highlight the importance of collaboration within the continuum of care as well as community work, as they are in the capacity of building trust. Trust is essential in order for people to accept support. We cannot and should not work in isolation but rather collaborate to ensure no one is left behind. We know and not only should we integrate it in our community work but also integrate it in our policies.

Today on , we commemorate the theme Rights. Justice. Action.

Women have the universal right to health, including access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services. But today, a major gap remains.

Globally, only 1 in 18 women with substance use disorders receive treatment, compared to 1 in 7 men. Women face unique barriers: stigma, trauma, violence, fear of losing custody, and services that are not designed for their needs.

When women cannot access care, the impact goes beyond the individual. It affects families, children, and future generations.

This International Women’s Day, we call for action:
✔ Gender-responsive prevention
✔ Trauma-informed treatment
✔ Safe, stigma-free services
✔ Women’s voices at the centre

Closing the treatment gap is not just a health issue: it’s a matter of rights and justice.
