When Do I Sign Up for Medicare?
This is one of the most common questions we hear—and the answer really does depend on your situation. But timing matters.
Most people enroll in Medicare Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) when they first become eligible, usually at age 65. This happens during your Initial Enrollment Period, which lasts 7 months:
✔️ 3 months before your 65th birthday
✔️ Your birthday month
✔️ 3 months after
Signing up during this window helps you avoid coverage gaps and late enrollment penalties.
Still working at 65?
If you or your spouse have health coverage through an employer, you may be able to delay Part B without penalty. When that coverage ends, you’ll qualify for a Special Enrollment Period—but the rules and timing are important.
Missed your window?
You may still be able to enroll between January 1 and March 31, but doing so can lead to permanent penalties and delayed coverage.
Everyone’s situation is different, and small details—like employer coverage or Social Security status—can change the right answer.
If you’re unsure when to enroll, we’re happy to help you understand your options and avoid costly mistakes.
