Happy Holidays from our Dementia Friendly community! ❄️

However you’re spending the holidays, we wish you moments of peace, patience, and joy. May this season be filled with warmth, understanding, and gentle reminders that love doesn’t fade, even when memories do.

From our hearts to yours, Happy Holidays. 💜

🎄 The holidays can feel very different when dementia is part of your family’s journey. Traditions may change, routines may need to be simplified, and expectations may look nothing like they once did. And that can be emotional — especially when memories of “how it used to be” are still close to your heart.

But the true meaning of the holidays has never been about perfection. It’s about presence, connection, and creating moments of comfort and love. A shared smile, a familiar song, holding hands, or simply sitting together in a calm space can matter more than a full schedule or perfectly kept traditions.

If you’re caring for someone living with dementia, it’s okay to let go of what no longer fits. It’s okay to simplify, adjust, and even create new traditions that meet your loved one where they are today.

This season, may you give yourself grace and remember that you are doing enough. 💙

Finding meaningful gifts for a loved one living with dementia can feel overwhelming, but the most powerful gifts are often the simplest ones. This holiday season, consider giving items that offer comfort, connection, and sensory engagement… and even combine them into a beautiful Holiday Memory Box.

🎁 How to make a Holiday Memory Box:
• Choose a simple box or decorative container.
• Add 5–10 meaningful items such as old ornaments, recipe cards, holiday cards, or scent based items.
• Include a few handwritten notes or memory prompts.
• Sit together, explore the items slowly, and let memories unfold gently.

Remember: the best gifts aren’t the most expensive — they’re the ones that help your loved one feel safe, connected, and loved. 💙

💜 Did you know that taste and smell are powerful tools for memory recall?
For individuals living with dementia, familiar scents like cinnamon, vanilla, and warm apples can bring comfort, reduce anxiety, and spark meaningful moments of connection.

✨ Why this matters:
Taste and smell are closely linked to the emotional centers of the brain. Even when other parts of memory fade, the senses often remain strong pathways to recognition, familiarity, and joy.

Small sensory moments can create big emotional impact. 💙

This holiday season, try incorporating more comforting scents and flavors into your daily routine—they may help bring back beautiful memories worth sharing.

❄️ Winter can be a difficult time for many of us, especially caregivers and seniors. Shorter days, reduced sunlight, and the stress of daily responsibilities can lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)—a form of depression that typically appears during the winter months.

SAD happens when limited sunlight disrupts the body’s internal clock and affects important mood-regulating hormones like serotonin and melatonin. For caregivers who already face chronic stress, or seniors managing health challenges, this seasonal shift can feel overwhelming.

Common signs of SAD include low or persistent sadness, feeling withdrawn or uninterested, fatigue or lack of motivation, appetite changes, or sleep difficulties.

Recognizing these signs early, in yourself or a loved one, can make a big difference.
