Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can slowly steal your central vision, making it harder to read, recognize faces, or see fine details. While there is currently no cure, there are ways to help protect your vision.
For patients with dry AMD and geographic atrophy, eye injections may help slow the progression and delay further vision loss.

Although drusen can’t be treated directly, certain people may benefit from AREDS2 nutritional supplements—a specific blend of vitamins and minerals shown to slow dry AMD in eligible patients. Your ophthalmologist can help determine if these supplements are right for you.

Early diagnosis, regular monitoring, and proper care are key to protecting your vision for as long as possible.

WHY did I choose ophthalmology as a career in the first place?!🤓😂
Listen to the end….
Now that I’m on sabbatical from clinical medicine, I love reviewing my original intentions in the first place….
I have been blessed to be in a field that has given me so much.
I still remember my first ophthalmic surgery during my residency🤓🥹
Guess what the surgery was?

Managing high eye pressure is essential to protecting your vision when you have glaucoma. Simple habits—like using your prescribed eye drops consistently, staying active with safe exercise, and following a nutrient-rich diet—can help support your eye health. Regular check-ups with your eye doctor are equally important, ensuring your eye pressure stays controlled and your optic nerve stays protected.

Cataracts and glaucoma can both affect your vision, but in different ways.
Cataracts cloud the eye’s natural lens, causing blurry, hazy, or dim vision. Glaucoma, on the other hand, damages the optic nerve—often due to high eye pressure—and can slowly reduce your peripheral vision over time.

For some patients who have both conditions, the eye doctor may recommend a combined cataract and glaucoma surgery. This approach can help restore clarity by removing the cloudy lens while also lowering eye pressure to protect the optic nerve. It may reduce the need for separate procedures and support better long-term eye health.

Regular eye exams help catch these conditions early—protecting your vision and giving you more treatment options.

Blepharitis is a common condition where the eyelids become inflamed, often causing redness, irritation, and crusty buildup at the base of the eyelashes. While it usually doesn’t cause permanent vision loss, it can make your eyes feel scratchy, watery, or sensitive to light, and may lead to more serious eye problems if left untreated. Practicing daily self-care—like gentle eyelid cleaning, warm compresses, and keeping lashes free of debris—can help soothe symptoms, reduce irritation, and maintain healthy, comfortable eyes. Regular attention to your eyelid hygiene is key to keeping your eyes clean and supporting overall eye health.

Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of sight — and for good reason. It slowly damages the optic nerve, often without noticeable symptoms at first. Over time, this can lead to gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision, and if untreated, permanent vision loss.

Common causes include increased eye pressure, family history of glaucoma, aging, past eye injuries, and certain medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. Regular eye exams are essential for early detection and protection of your vision.

Cataracts often develop gradually as the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy — a change commonly linked to aging, diabetes, prolonged sun exposure, or eye injury. Over time, this can blur vision and make everyday tasks harder. Regular eye exams play a key role in detecting cataracts early, monitoring changes, and guiding treatment options to help keep your vision clear and comfortable.

Blepharitis is a common inflammation of the eyelids that can cause redness, irritation, burning, and crusting around the lashes. It’s often linked to skin conditions like rosacea or dandruff, bacterial buildup, or oil gland dysfunction. While it can be chronic, blepharitis is manageable with good eyelid hygiene—such as warm compresses, gentle lid scrubs, and following your eye doctor’s treatment plan. Regular care can help relieve discomfort and keep your eyes healthy and clear.
