We would like to thank the Lincoln Community Foundation for its generous support of Granite Wellness Centers.
Last week, Kris Knutson, President of the Lincoln Community Foundation, visited our Lincoln facility to learn more about our programs and current needs, and was welcomed by Irma Moraga, our Lincoln Programs Manager, who shared current program needs and priorities. Following that visit, the Foundation quickly approved a grant to strengthen our instructional capacity at the Lincoln site.
This funding will directly benefit 500+ adults each year who are enrolled in education, court-mandated programs, and group therapeutic services at Granite Wellness Centers’ Lincoln facility, as well as clients from nearby communities who receive services at this location. At the community level, Lincoln residents will benefit because increased access to evidence-based education and recovery supports contributes to a healthier, more resilient community.
Next, we plan to collaborate on updating the clinical component of our services. We look forward to continuing this collaboration through future community-focused projects.
The Lincoln Community Foundation has been investing in the Lincoln community through grants since 2005 to create positive, lasting change. Learn more about their work: https://lincolncommunityfoundation.org/

DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day - October 25, 2025, 10AM to 2PM
The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a nationwide effort to help people safely dispose of unused, unwanted, or expired medications. Hosted with thousands of law enforcement partners, the event offers free, anonymous drop-off sites so medicines don’t end up misused, diverted, or flushed into waterways. You’ll find official event materials and background on the DEA’s site: https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/takeback.html

Why this day matters
Removing old medications from homes reduces opportunities for misuse and accidental poisonings. In the most recent spring event on April 26, 2025, partners collected more than 620,000 pounds of medications, bringing the cumulative total since the program began to nearly 19.8 million pounds safely removed from circulation.

What you can bring
Event sites accept most medicines in solid form, including:
•Tablets, capsules, and patches
•Many over-the-counter medications
•Vaping devices and cartridges, if lithium batteries are removed
•Liquids (like cough syrup) may be accepted at some sites if they remain tightly sealed in original containers. Syringes/needles (sharps) and illicit substances are not accepted. Always check your specific site’s rules before you go.

How to participate
1. Use the DEA’s official locator and search by ZIP code or city/state. https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/takeback.html
2. Keep medicines in a sealed bag or original container. If desired, cover personal info on labels. Site staff will direct you where to drop items. Guidance and event resources are available on the DEA Take Back Day page.

October is Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month. This is a time to focus on what keeps our communities healthy and safe: teaching skills early, supporting parents and caregivers, building positive school climates, and expanding healthy activities for youth.

At Granite Wellness Centers, we recognize that substance use affects every part of our community: families, schools, workplaces, and local budgets. We also know that prevention works. Evidence-based programs such as LifeSkills Training help young people build coping skills, delay first use, and reduce harm. These programs don’t just change lives; they save money. For every $1 invested, LifeSkills Training returns an estimated $16 in benefits through reduced health care, justice system, and social costs.

Granite Wellness Centers supports the Coalition for Auburn and Lincoln Youth, CALY, a local team dedicated to preventing youth substance use and creating safer environments for young people. Learn more and get involved: https://www.raisingplacer.org/caly/
If your school, workplace, or community group would like a prevention presentation or resources, contact CALY. Together, we can strengthen protective factors, reduce harm, and help our youth thrive.

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD)
On August 31, Granite Wellness Centers stands with people around the world to remember those we’ve lost to overdose and to end this crisis. IOAD is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose; its goals are to remember loved ones, acknowledge the grief of those left behind, tell people who use drugs and those in recovery that they are valued, inform communities about overdose risks and support services, and prevent drug‑related harm through evidence‑based practices. By coming together, we send a powerful message that overdose deaths are preventable and that help and healing are possible.
The need for action is urgent. Overdoses are the leading injury‑related cause of death in the United States. In 2022, more than 107,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, and nearly three-quarters involved opioids. Provisional data from 2024 show roughly 80,000 reported overdose deaths, with almost 75% attributed to opioids. These heartbreaking numbers represent friends, family members, and neighbors whose lives were cut short.

Granite Wellness Centers honors every life lost, and every person left grieving. We also commit to reducing stigma and expanding access to treatment and harm-reduction tools such as naloxone. Opioids, especially illegally made fentanyl, are involved in the highest percentage of overdose deaths, yet evidence‑based prevention and treatment can save lives. On International Overdose Awareness Day, we encourage our community to learn the signs of an opioid overdose and how to respond. Knowing what to look for and how to act could help you save a life.

Carfentanil: A Renewed and Escalating Threat

While fentanyl-related overdoses have begun to decline in some areas, a far more powerful opioid is re-emerging in the illicit drug supply: carfentanil.

First seen in U.S. drug markets several years ago, carfentanil is now making a dangerous comeback, increasingly found in counterfeit pills and mixed into other drugs without users’ knowledge. Fentanyl test strips often can’t detect it, and naloxone may not always be effective after a single dose.

As the opioid crisis evolves, so must our awareness and response. Learn more in the slides.

Substance Use Prevention Is About All of Us

At Granite Wellness Centers, we believe prevention is a shared responsibility.

Teen va**ng is on the rise, putting young people at greater risk for future substance use, including opioids. Behind every statistic is a child, a family, or even an entire community.

If substance use has affected your life, the lives of those around you or your community, this is an opportunity to help prevent it from spreading further.

Donate today to help us reach more youth, share life-saving information, and fight the drug epidemic together: https://www.granitewellness.org/donate/

If each of us gives at least $5, together we can build a stronger foundation for healthier futures.
