While teaching a kindergarten class, Carlee Ramirez noticed one of her students, 5-year-old Charlie, with a panicked look on her face. Charlie was holding a lollipop stick in her hand, without the candy at the end. Realizing that she was choking on the candy, Carlee immediately sprung into action by administering back blows and several abdominal thrusts before Charlie finally spit out the candy.

“I look back and it was a very scary day. You think you won’t know what to do, but then you just do it,” she said. "I feel so proud and thankful that I knew what to do.”

For her act of heroism, Carlee received a Certificate of Extraordinary Personal Action from the American Red Cross Michigan Region at a school board meeting, where her fellow teachers, students, friends and family were all in attendance.
