❤️ February is National Heart Month! ❤️

Heart disease remains the #1 cause of death in the United States, responsible for nearly 1 in 4 U.S. deaths in 2023. It continues to take more lives each year than any other cause, underscoring the importance of prevention, awareness, and healthy lifestyle choices. [cdc.gov]

This month, we’re proud to recognize Partnership for a Drug-Free Community’s Youth To***co & Va**ng Prevention Education Program, a vital effort that equips young people with the facts about ni****ne, va**ng, and long‑term health risks. National data show e‑cigarettes have been the most commonly used to***co product among U.S. youth since 2014, making early education and prevention more important than ever. [cdc.gov]

💓 By raising awareness about heart health and supporting youth va**ng prevention, we strengthen our community’s future—one heart at a time.

Community,

This Valentine’s Day, Choose Recovery.

Valentine’s Day is everywhere right now — flowers, dinner reservations, social media highlight reels. But for many people in recovery, today can feel heavy.

Lonely. Triggering. Tempting.

At Partnership for a Drug Free Community, we want to say this clearly:
Your sobriety is worth more than a moment of comfort.

If today brings up old memories…
If you feel the pull to numb out…
If you’re struggling with relationship loss or isolation…

Pause.
Breathe.
Reach out before you react.

Recovery is not about being perfect. It’s about choosing differently — especially on the hard days.

Today, better yet EVERYDAY choose:
•Connection over isolation
•Boundaries over chaos
•Strength over impulse
•Healing over history

You have fought too hard to get here.
Valentine’s Day is about love — and the most powerful form of love is protecting your life.

If you or someone you love needs support, we are here.

Alabama is stronger when we protect our recovery community.

This Valentine’s Day, choose yourself. Choose healing.
Choose sobriety.
That is real love.

📚💙 Our Community Showed Up BIG!

Recently, Partnership for a Drug‑Free Community reached out asking for help collecting books to share with local children and individuals in recovery — a simple but powerful way to enrich lives, encourage learning, and support healing.

And YOU ALL DELIVERED!!

Thanks to the generosity of this amazing community, we collected a total of 1,262 books! 🙌✨

These books will soon be in the hands of children who need encouragement AND individuals on their recovery journey who could use a little more hope and inspiration.❤️

Thank you for proving once again that when we come together, we make our community stronger, brighter, and more connected.📖

🌟 Heroes of Hope: Black History Month Recovery Spotlight

Today we’re celebrating Joe Powell, President & CEO of the Association of Persons Affected by Addiction (APAA), and one of the nation’s most influential leaders in peer based substance use recovery.

For more than 25 years, Joe has championed a vision of hope, wellness, and community driven support. Under his leadership, APAA became the first Recovery Community Organization in Texas to receive National “Exemplary” Accreditation for Peer Recovery Support Services — a testament to the power of peer connection and culturally rooted care. [thepoga.org]

With over 33 years of personal recovery experience, Joe is a nationally recognized expert in Peer Recovery Coaching and has been honored with multiple awards, including the prestigious Vernon Johnson Award for outstanding contributions to advancing recovery. [recoveryiswhy.org]

Joe’s impact reaches far beyond Dallas. He has worked alongside judges, behavioral health authorities, and statewide advocacy groups; contributed to specialty courts; and supported hospital and jail diversion programs — all while uplifting communities through equity focused recovery efforts. [thepoga.org]

In 2024, he was recognized with RecoveryPeople’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades of transformative work, leadership in peer support, and commitment to expanding health equity in substance use recovery nationwide. [recoverypeople.org]

💜 Joe Powell’s story is one of resilience, leadership, and unwavering dedication — and countless individuals and families have been empowered because of it.
