Hello!

All applications will be reviewed, but none have yet been forwarded to the program directors. This is not a rolling admission. All rural program interviews are conducted on the same day; also all acceptances are sent out on the same day.

Very nice visit to NACC. Thanks Mr. Land.

Community College women and men can matriculate to Auburn and complete RMP requirements in two years for an ASSURED ADMISSION TO UAB SCHOOL OF MEDICINE.

Imagine getting in the 33rd ranked medical school in the country with a 3.3 and a 34th percentile MCAT!

Rural shadowing, community service and evidence of leadership is essential.

Applications open today.

This is under UAB SOM Special Apps.

AMCAS comes later.

Remember on your app. point out rural roots, activities, family. Emphasize rural shadowing of primary care physicians.

Last year we interviewed 19 applicants for 24 places. We got about 24 total applications, some were not from rural Alabama. Virtually all who are interviewed are accepted and go to UAB SOM.

Please consider us if you get an MCAT of 495 or better.

The Jan MCAT date will not be acceptable for the ‘21-‘22 application cycle. Contact me for more information 256-508-2189.

The doctors pictured above have graduated and moved on. I will fondly remember each of their stories and remain proud to have been a small part of their journey. One will seldom meet a finer group of young Americans.

I will post the nest class soon.

For those looking at the 2021 application cycle the UAB SOM rural special application opens the beginning of November. Those from urban Alabama or those interested in subspecialties should not apply. We welcome rural Alabamians interested in FM, pediatrics or IM, but FM is by far the most needed specialty in the state.

Bertie and I have nearly finished the home makeover for the Moore House, used for short term student housing. It is the result of scores of hours or hard work and the result is amazing. A big shout out to Ms. Laura Tucker for her art work and landscaping and of course my lovely wife, Bertie whose vision and taste made the project beautiful.

Another academic year is coming to a close. It has been such a privilege to be part of the journey of those in the picture. Better human beings you will seldom find.

The UAB School of Medicine was recently ranked the 21st best medical school in primary care and 33rd overall. It has been ranked as the best “new” medical school in the world for a number of years. Even with the required post bacc. year the RMP currently requires it is still best value in medical education in the state.

If you want to give back to the community and your vision is small town Family Medicine, UAB Rural Programs have a pathway for you and several rural scholarships are available after admission and/or after your training.

I hope everyone has a safe and merry Christmas.

The RMP application season is open.

You may hold a regular admission UAB waitlist and an RMP acceptance until spring before you must choose, so all rural Alabama students committed to rural family medicine should apply.

‘63 AU alum, Dr. Hugh Bassham authored a book, Better Health and How to Achieve It.

Although not an official UAB test it is certainly worth a look. Health has little to do with health care and everything to do with patient behavior.

And so it goes...

In another vein I am looking forward to applications to the RMP; get them in ASAP so I will have sufficient time for perusal.
