What is really going on with added protein in every beverage being sold?

The Rise of “Protein Everything”
Walk through almost any grocery store in the United States today and you’ll see something interesting:

Protein drinks.
Protein coffee.
Protein water.
Protein yogurt beverages.
Protein snack bars.
Protein pancakes in a bottle.
Protein is essential for the body.

It helps maintain muscle, supports metabolism, and contributes to satiety. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting enough protein in your diet.

But what’s happening in the marketplace is something different. Even at Starbucks and coffee stands.

Food companies have discovered that adding the word “protein” dramatically increases sales. When a product says “high protein,” many consumers automatically assume it is healthy.

Yet if you read the ingredient labels, many of these beverages are still ultra-processed products, often containing:

• Artificial sweeteners
• Stabilizers and gums
• Flavor chemicals
• Highly refined ingredients
• Added sugars or sugar alcohols

A label can say “20 grams of protein” and still be far from real nourishment.

Protein has become a marketing signal, not always a health indicator.

The Illusion of Convenience
Another powerful message being sold is this:

“You’re too busy to eat real food.”

So the solution becomes: drink your meals, grab a bar, sip a shake in the car, and keep pushing through the day.

This message quietly trains us to believe that caring for our bodies is optional.

That slowing down for a real meal is inconvenient.

That nourishment should be squeezed between meetings.

But our bodies were never designed to run on convenience.

Your body is designed for real food, real meals, and moments of pause. Your body is resilient when you give it what it needs.

Advertising vs. Truth
In the United States, the Truth in Advertising standards require companies not to make outright false claims.

But advertising doesn’t have to lie directly to mislead people.

It can simply highlight one positive attribute while distracting from the bigger picture.

For example:

A beverage can legally emphasize protein while ignoring the highly processed ingredients.
A product can be labeled “low sugar” while still being nutritionally empty.
A snack can be marketed as “healthy” because it contains one beneficial nutrient.

This is why learning to read labels and think critically about food marketing is one of the most powerful health skills we can develop.

3 ways to lead with calm clarity, instead of unprocessed emotions:

1. Do a 90 second reset pause - use breathing techniques. Science tells us that a feeling will pass in 90 seconds if we allow it. Give your brain a break.
2. Name it to tame it: in the moment name what you are feeling, say "I am feeling angry, or I am feeling sad because I am not being heard"
Then follow with what you can do now.
3. Lead with a curious question, replace judgement with curiousity. Instead of "why didn't you meet the deadline", ask "what got in the way, help me understand what support is needed"

Not resolving your own past emotional triggers and shoving them aside, won't make you a stronger leader. It will make you weaker. As human beings we are driven by emotions. You can stuff them down all you want to try, drinking, eating, shopping. But none of that will really resolve them.
