We don’t have otoplasties on the schedule every week, but we have one this week and thought we’d take a minute to talk about them and what they are.

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or repositions the ears - most commonly to correct ears that are overly prominent or protruding. Dr. McLain is experienced in this less common procedure, drawing patients from North Alabama and surrounding areas.

The procedure is available once a patient’s ears have finished developing, usually around age 8/9 years old, making it a great option for both children and adults.

Optimal results typically involve the removal of overgrown cartilage and the reshaping of existing cartilage. It is performed under either general anesthesia or IV sedation and usually takes just a few hours.
