When I hear of therapists leaving the field, defeated, it hurts my heart. Most of us go into mental health because we genuinely want to witness people as they work to heal and change their lives. It’s an honor and a gift.

But getting here often demands something from us that, if we’re not careful, can wreak havoc on our own systems. We do what needs to be done to gain experience, complete licensure requirements, and pay our bills, yet many never get the chance to fully reap the benefits.

I’ve been showing up on Instagram more lately and have been asking myself why. The more I think about it, the more the answer comes to me. If I can inspire even one therapist who has the desire to go into private practice to take the leap, and do it in a way that reflects them while helping so many others along the way, it’s worth it. For me, private practice has been a dream. If it’s yours too, I want to influence you to do it, and do it your way. 🤍

People apologize for a lot of things in therapy. For crying, rambling, swearing, bringing up the same issue again, wearing sweatpants…

But therapy was never meant to be a place to perform being “put together.” Actually, it’s one of the few places where you’re allowed to show up exactly as you are, no matter how messy you feel.

And as therapists, we know that apologies usually say a lot more about the pressure people carry outside the room than anything happening inside it.

What’s something you’ve caught yourself (or notice others) apologizing for in therapy?

There’s a lot of very confident advice about how therapists should run a private practice. And some of that advice works really well for certain therapists! But one of the best parts of being in private practice is that there isn’t just one way to do it in order to be successful. *You* get to decide what best fits your values, personality, and the clients you serve.

External feedback in your career (and in life) will always vary. 💛

You’ll receive praise for how you run your practice…and criticism, too. If your sense of stability depends on either, the work will wear you down and pull you away from the practice you’re trying to build.

Stay anchored in your values and keep showing up. That’s how you’ll help people in the way only you can.

Things that are 100% okay to say to your therapist 🛋️✨

✔️ “I don’t know what to talk about.”
Totally fine! Sometimes that’s the best starting point.

✔️ “I didn’t want to come today.”
That is so okay to say. Maybe you’re tired, overwhelmed, avoiding something hard… or just didn’t feel like it.

✔️ “I didn’t do the thing we talked about.”
No explanations required and I’m not grading you.

✔️ “I don’t think this is helping.”
That’s not rude, it’s so important. If something feels off, slow, confusing, or unhelpful, say it and we’ll adjust.

✔️ “I don’t want to come every week.”
Okay, let’s discuss! Maybe we adjust frequency, explore avoidance, discuss finances, or your schedule. We’ll find something that works and is clinically appropriate.

✔️ “I’m running late” or “I need to reschedule.”
Life happens. Just communicate with me!

✔️ “I’m scared to try EMDR.”
Totally fair. EMDR and trauma work isn’t something you’re forced or rushed into. You can ask questions, go slow, say no, or change your mind. We’ll never do anything without your consent.

✔️ “I feel embarrassed saying this.”
That sentence alone usually means you’re about to say something important.

✔️ “Something you said has been bothering me.”
Please tell me. Therapy gets stronger after rupture and repair, not weaker.

Honesty = better therapy, every time. What would you add to this list?! 💛

I’m a solo practice owner and grew my therapist Instagram by 10,000 followers since last fall. It was trial, error, and paying attention to the posts that sparked real conversation in the comments. It’s been fun!

If you’re a therapist trying to grow your account, here’s my honest advice:

Stop treating Instagram like a boring list of specialties. Share your thoughts on therapy topics, tell your story, show some personality, teach us something useful or share what’s worked for you. Help people, build trust, and stay visible. When the time is right, your community will think of you!

Shoutout to my photographer who took my beautiful headshots that I post so much 🤍

The beauty of go-to therapists is that there can be many in a town, because each of us is one of a kind.
Different style, different clients, different expertise, but all equally memorable. 💜 How do you make sure you’re someone people think of first?

Ending therapy sessions at 53 minutes is harder than it sounds, and it’s really easy to get in the habit of running right up to the next hour. But those 7 minutes between clients are meant to protect you. They give you time to use the restroom, write a note, and regroup. I’ve been using my Apple Watch as a tool, and it’s been helping a lot.

Therapists, what’s your best strategy for ending sessions on time?

Be you, in bloom

Hi, I’m glad you’re here! I'm Louisa, a Licensed Professional Counselor and the founder of Bloom Counseling. I work with busy, high-achieving individuals who are facing challenges that are keeping them from reaching their maximum potential. If you're struggling in your home life, career, at school, or in sports, I can help.

Oftentimes, the desire for perfection results in high levels of stress, low self-esteem, and burnout. These things lead to many other issues that can take a toll on your mood, relationships, and performance. In a safe and supportive environment, I will guide you as you overcome the obstacles that are holding you back from being the best version of yourself.
