Cancer Support Community East Tennessee

Cancer Support Community East Tennessee We provide a community for those facing cancer to support each other under the guidance of professional staff.

Our programs, all free of charge, offer cancer patients and their loved ones ways to actively participate in the management of their health. CSCET programs include weekly and monthly support groups, educational workshops on managing cancer, health and wellness classes and opportunities to connect socially with others facing cancer. Our programs were developed to offer options to cancer patients and their caregivers/loved ones to improve their physical and mental function, educate about stress reduction techniques and encourage engagement in behaviors necessary to manage illness and promote health and a sense of hope for the future. At Cancer Support Community East Tennessee, people affected by cancer are able to unite together, under the guidance of trained professionals, to face their diagnosis in a compassionate, supportive environment. Research shows that psychosocial distress caused by a cancer diagnosis is associated with decreased adherence to treatment, relapse of disease, diminished survival rates, higher medical costs and additional burden on existing medical systems. These challenges require a mobilization of resources and support systems, use of problem solving skills and the ability to understand complex information about a disease and options for treatment. CSCET programs have been developed to help meet these psychological, social and educational needs in order to improve adherence to treatment, quality of life and perhaps survival.

We enjoyed participating at the Colon Cancer Awareness event at UT Medical on Friday, March 6. March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and we were happy to share the free programs and services we provide to people impacted by cancer. The giant colon helped bring the message home and the importance of screening. Thank you to Natera for organizing and sponsoring this event.

One of my favorite parts of doing an orientation visit with a new member is giving a tour and offering them an emotional support chicken. These chickens are knitted by members of our knitting group for anyone in need of support. The response can be surprising, and people usually choose to take a chicken home! I learned earlier today that chickens are social, living in and developing ways of communicating amongst each other. This is one of the things we talk about in our support programs- the importance of community, communication and support. Come meet with one of our program staff members to learn more about the programs we offer at no charge to individuals with cancer and their loved ones. You might even want to join the knitting group and learn to make a chicken too! Call us at 865-546-4661 to schedule an orientation meeting today.
