Cancer Support Community East Tennessee

Cancer Support Community East Tennessee We provide a community for those facing cancer to support each other under the guidance of professional staff.

Our programs, all free of charge, offer cancer patients and their loved ones ways to actively participate in the management of their health. CSCET programs include weekly and monthly support groups, educational workshops on managing cancer, health and wellness classes and opportunities to connect socially with others facing cancer. Our programs were developed to offer options to cancer patients and their caregivers/loved ones to improve their physical and mental function, educate about stress reduction techniques and encourage engagement in behaviors necessary to manage illness and promote health and a sense of hope for the future. At Cancer Support Community East Tennessee, people affected by cancer are able to unite together, under the guidance of trained professionals, to face their diagnosis in a compassionate, supportive environment. Research shows that psychosocial distress caused by a cancer diagnosis is associated with decreased adherence to treatment, relapse of disease, diminished survival rates, higher medical costs and additional burden on existing medical systems. These challenges require a mobilization of resources and support systems, use of problem solving skills and the ability to understand complex information about a disease and options for treatment. CSCET programs have been developed to help meet these psychological, social and educational needs in order to improve adherence to treatment, quality of life and perhaps survival.

CSCET is pleased to welcome Daniel McWhirter to our Board of Directors. Daniel is the President and Partner at Tennessee Pension Administrators. A University of Tennessee graduate, Daniel also spent a year teaching high school.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing golf, traveling, cooking pizza and is a passionate sports fan. After walking with his in-laws in their journey fighting cancer, Daniel came to CSCET with the perspective of how helpful CSCET could have been during their battles.

We wanted to share this TN resource with families that might benefit from this unique experience for children with cancer and their siblings.

Camp Horizon’s Oncology Camp is open to children ages 6 to 17 who were diagnosed with cancer or received cancer treatment within the last five years. Children do not need to be in active treatment to attend camp.

SIBS Camp is open to children ages 6 to 17 whose sibling is a current or former cancer patient. SIBS Camp is designed to meet the special emotional needs of the well child whose family has been touched by cancer.

A link to apply for this year's sessions can be found in the comments!
