The FMCSA has some important updates coming in 2024 that truckers should keep on their radar. Here’s what Truckstop wants you to know: 👇

1.) New Registration System:

The FMCSA plans to replace the outdated Unified Registration System (URS) with the new FMCSA Registration System (FRS). This system aims to reduce fraud by requiring digital identity verification and eliminating several forms, including the MCS-150.

2.) New Entrant Safety Assurance Program:

Expected rule changes may require new drivers to pass proficiency exams to demonstrate their knowledge of federal safety regulations.

3.) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse Rule:

Starting November 18, 2024, drivers with a “prohibited” status in the FMCSA’s Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse will lose their CDL or CLP until they complete the return-to-duty process.

4.) Speed Limiter Rule:

A final rule may soon require carriers to activate speed limiters on trucks over 26,000 lbs. This rule is still pending publication.

5.) Autonomous Trucks:

New guidelines are being developed for autonomous commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) at Levels 4 and 5, with the final rule currently under review.

Freight rates fluctuate weekly based on current market demand, but which loads pay higher is relatively constant. Dry vans pay the least, flatbed loads pay higher, and refrigerated cargo pays the most. Each type of load required different driver skills and equipment.
