Happy to share our team’s newest publication examining the intersection of mental and physical health. Here, we looked at the epidemiological association of ADHD with a common, genetic enzymopathy. G6PD is a neuroprotective enzyme that plays a critical role in inflammatory and immune processes, and management of oxidative stress. Its deficiency can lead to neurocognitive problems. The most severe deficiencies are found in people with two sets of genes for impaired functioning (homozygous), but even people with a single gene may have mild impairments (heterozygous). The resulting spectrum of liability can be exaccerbated by certain foods, medications, and physical or emotional stress, resulting in more subtle problems and accumulated damage across the lifespan. In our study, we found that G6PD deficiency predicted greater use of psychiatric services for ADHD in adulthood, though not in childhood. We propose that G6PD is a small but significant contributor to the trajectory of ADHD across the lifespan among affected individuals.

New research finds that children born to mothers who were pregnant during Superstorm Sandy were much more likely to develop anxiety, depression, and ADHD in early childhood than were their peers whose mothers were pregnant before or after Sandy. As climate change increases exposure to environmental disasters, research on risks and resilience play a critical role in caring for those most vulnerable. Read more here:
