“Craving Surfing” is a mindfulness-based technique used to resist giving into the temptation of a craving. When you craving surf try to imagine the craving as a wave that you are surfing on and riding safely to shore. Like all waves, the craving wave starts slow, increases its swell, hits peak intensity and then starts to swell down until there no longer is any wave. It dissolves back into the sea and homeostasis is restored once more. Your job, as the surfer, is to not let the wave wipe you out.
The essence of this method is to distance yourself from the thoughts and feelings that are experienced during an intense craving. Doing so yields some powerful insights. You are not your thoughts. You are not your feelings. You are not your cravings. You are not your addiction. Your True Self is consciousness itself. Your True Self is what observes these things. Your True Self is the nonattached watcher.
It can also be helpful to imagine the thoughts and feelings you experience during a craving as dark thunderstorm clouds that block out the sun, which is your True Self. Just because there are clouds does not mean the Sun isn’t there, its brilliance is just being blocked. When the clouds pass, as they always do, the Sun will shine forth once more. So try your best to be patient, and trust the process of mindful observation in craving surfing to help you prevent relapse.
