The 47-year-old actor finally takes centre stage in Christopher Nolan’s new blockbuster as J. Robert Oppenheimer – the father of the atomic bomb – and relished his latest collaboration with the acclaimed director.

Speaking at the movie’s UK premiere in London on Thursday (13.07.23) – which he and fellow cast members left early following the announcement of the SAG-AFTRA strike – Cillian Murphy said: “I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s a dream job to work with all these astonishingly talented actors, the best actors in the world.
“Myself and Chris have been working together for 20 years now and it feels like we were working towards this point the whole time,” Cillian Murphy added.

Cillian Murphy has worked with Christopher Nolan on movies such as ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘Inception‘ but considers the director’s latest picture – which also features stars such as Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Robert Downey Jr. – to be his most accomplished work yet.

Asked how the filmmaker’s style has changed, the ‘Peaky Blinders‘ actor said: “I think he’s just focusing on refining his vision the whole time, I think this might be his magnum opus.

“I’ll be there for any part he wants, you know sword carrier or whatever, I’ll be there.”

The much-anticipated film’s powerful subject matter has provoked strong reactions from those who have seen the movie and Cillian Murphy believes that the project contains everything that an audience wants on the big screen.

He said: “People are devastated, people are overwhelmed. People want to see it two or three times. People are moved, it’s all of the things that you want from cinema really.”

Cillian Murphy reveals he read Bhagavad Gita for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer

American nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War 2, learned Sanskrit. Actor Cillian also referred to Indian sacred text for a deeper understanding of his character.

Actor Cillian Murphy, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming biopic, Oppenheimer, has shared that in order to prepare for the titular character and to get into its mindspace, he read Bhagavad Gita, the foundational text of Hinduism.
American nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War 2, and is often credited as the "father of the atomic bomb" for his role in the Manhattan Project, learned Sanskrit at Berkley.

"I have become death, the destroyer of worlds" is the most repeated quote of Oppenheimer. He borrowed it from Geeta. Talking about the same, Cillian Murphy said: "I did read the Bhagavad Gita in preparation for the film. I thought it was an absolutely beautiful text. Very inspiring. It was a consolation to him. He kind of needed it. It provided a lot of consolation to him all his life."
Talking to Wired magazine, Christopher Nolan revealed that the movie, Oppenheimer, will focus on the invention that changed the course of human history forever. When Christopher Nolan was questioned about AI, the filmmaker compared it to the likes of the atomic bomb in the contemporary world.

Christopher Nolan compared AI and the atomic bomb by saying, “I think the relationship is an interesting one. It’s not the same. But it’s the best analogy — which is why I used it in Tenet, for the dangers of unthinkingly unleashing a new technology on the world. It's a cautionary tale. There are lessons to be learned from it.” He further mentioned that the atomic bomb was definitely an invention that managed to endanger the entire world.

‘Oppenheimer’ cast walks out of UK premiere ahead of SAG strike
The cast of director Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated war-era drama “Oppenheimer” is standing united in the effort to support the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Stars of the film appeared on the red carpet of the film’s UK premiere on Thursday before the strike was officially announced, but they ended up walking out of the event “to write their picket signs,” according to Nolan.

Addressing the audience inside the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square theater before the screening began, as seen in videos posted to social media, Nolan acknowledged the work of Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and Robert Downey Jr., among other “Oppenheimer” cast members.
“We have to acknowledge (that) you’ve seen them here earlier on the red carpet,” Nolan said, adding “unfortunately they’re off to write their picket signs for what we believe to be an imminent strike by SAG.”

Nolan continued that the actors who left the “Oppenheimer” premiere in support of the union that represents them join “one of my guilds, the Writer’s Guild, in the struggle for fair wages for working members of the union, and we support them.”

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has been on strike since May.
Blunt told Deadline on the “Oppenheimer” red carpet Thursday, prior to the cast walking out of the screening and prior to the strike’s official commencement, that her hopes were that “everyone makes a fair deal and we are here to celebrate this movie.”

“And if they call (the strike), we’ll be leaving together as a cast in unity with everyone,” Blunt said, adding, “We are gonna have to. So we will see what happens. Right now it’s the joy to be together.”

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA)’s president Fran Drescher announced in an impassioned speech during a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday that the union will go on strike.

The strike is set to go into effect at midnight PT Thursday night.

“Oppenheimer” is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 21.

All Blacks boss hints at a positional switch for Will Jordan
Will Jordan marks his return to the All Blacks jersey against the Springboks on Saturday, starting on the right wing for the Rugby Championship clash.

Jordan missed the latter stages of last year and most of the Crusaders’ season in 2023 due to migraine-related issues.

However, the talented outside back finished the Super Rugby Pacific season featuring at fullback for the Crusaders as they romped to yet another title defeating the Chiefs in the final.
This led to several pundits and former players calling for the Crusaders star to start there for the national team.

Calls to start at fullback
“The back three is the problem that New Zealand is really struggling with at the moment,” former All Blacks captain and scrum-half Justin Marshall said on Stan Sport’s Rugby Heaven.

“If he (Barrett) can’t start in his preferred position, which is 10, which he played all of the year at Super Rugby at, then why are we shifting the rest of the backline to fit in a player that is not position specific?

“There’s Will Jordan, Shaun Stevenson and Damian McKenzie in the mix who are all fullbacks. But what the All Blacks want to do is shift the fullback in Jordan to the wing to fit Beauden Barrett in. And I’m not sure that that’s where we want to be come Rugby World Cup time.”

Fellow former All Black Jeff Wilson also backed Jordan for the fullback role shortly after he made his comeback from injury.

“If he stays healthy, if he stays fit playing fullback for that side, their chances of winning this competition are better than they have been all season,” Wilson said and proved to be right before adding: “He’s an All Black fullback.”

The 25-year-old has a perfect strike rate at international level, having scored 21 tries in 21 Test matches for All Blacks.

However, this weekend Beauden Barrett will don the number 15 jumper against South Africa, after a starring performance against Argentina, with Jordan starting on the wing.

In fact, Jordan has yet to earn a start in his preferred position for the All Blacks, earning 17 starts on the right wing and four from the bench.
Getting his shot
This may change in the near future with All Blacks boss Ian Foster explaining that they are easing the youngster back into Test rugby on the wing.

When asked by the media if he considers Will Jordan as a fullback after naming his team to tackle the Boks, Foster replied, “Always do.”

He added: “Will wasn’t with us last week [in Argentina], and this week has been light, so we’ve eased him in a bit. We had to do quite a bit of work with him yesterday and today, but he’s a quality player.

“We were pleased with Beaudy last week, we enjoyed his control, and because Will wasn’t with us, this is a chance to come in and get a bit of a groove going on the wing.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up at fullback, so there’s a chance to play around with how we finish games. That’s also part of the picture we’re looking at.”

Effectively, the shortened preparation window meant that Barrett was preferred in the more demanding role, with the potential of Jordan finishing the game at fullback.

This would go some way to explaining the make-up of the All Blacks’ bench.

Foster has opted for the traditional 5-3 split in favour of the forwards with scrumhalf Finlay Christie, centre Braydon Ennor and winger Caleb Clarke as his backline options.

With Barrett and Richie Mo’unga in the starting XV, the All Blacks are well covered at flyhalf.

If Jordan were to move from the wing to fullback, Barrett could be replaced by Clarke or take over from Mo’unga at flyhalf.

Why Beauden Barrett is starting at fullback for the All Blacks over Will Jordan
The All Blacks have been boosted by the return of Will Jordan but the form Crusaders’ fullback will start in the familiar No 14 jersey on the right wing a start at fullback remains elusive.
Beauden Barrett has been named for the second week straight at fullback after starring in Mendoza with a try assist and a try in the 41-12 win.

Jordan has yet to start a game in the 15 jersey in his 21 Tests, making all his appearances of the wing, but head coach Ian Foster said the discussion is always had about handing Jordan a run at the back.
“Always do,” Foster told media of his consideration for Will Jordan at fullback.

“Will [Jordan] wasn’t with us last week and I was pleased with Beaudy last week. I enjoyed his control.

“Also because Will wasn’t with us this is a chance for him to come in and get a bit of a groove going on the wing.”

Foster said Jordan’s selection on the wing this week mainly came down to the short preparation window the team had after touching down in New Zealand on Monday from Argentina.

The All Blacks only had one field session on Thursday which Foster felt was not enough time for Jordan to prepare for playing No 15.
However as the side looks to find an answer to their late game slumps, Foster hinted that Jordan would find time at fullback to finish the game.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up at fullback,” he said.

“There is a chance for us to play around with our 23 and how we finish games.

“That’s also part of the picture we are looking at.”

Caleb Clarke has been named on the bench in the No 23 jersey along side centre wing option Braydon Ennor in the No 22.

Without a back-up first five option on the bench, a merry-go-round reshuffle that would see Clarke come onto the left wing, Telea moving across onto the right wing, Jordan moving to fullback and Beauden Barrett into first five is possible.
After recovering from a knee problem Foster is excited to see Blues winger Mark Telea back in action as part of his new look back three.

“It’s very exciting,” Foster said.

“We’ve been able to put Mark [Telea] a little bit on ice with his knee injury, but he got through a full week of training last week.

“He’s ready to go. Will wasn’t with us so he’s missed out on a little bit.

“This week has been really light for us, our first training on grass has been today.

“So we’ve eased him a bit with quite a bit of work with him today and yesterday.

“They’ve got some really good combinations going at the back so I’m sure they are looking forward to it.”
